Well, I told myself I'd try to start up a sketchbook thread again when CA got the new forum design, so here I am. I haven't really had a thread since that concepting challenge a while back... but I really need to step up and get dedicated. Hopefully I can do that. Background info: 21 years old, drawing for 2 years (missed the valuable "sitting in class" years) off and on, no formal education, started out making horrid anime sketches, finally understood importance of realism not too long ago. Anyway, I'm hoping to really dig in and start drawing regularly so I can really push myself and someday have a career in art.
Since it's the first post.. I'll throw in acouple old works, just to give an idea.

I love the colored pieces, verrrrrrrrry nice :btu:
Love the your sig too, too true for me unfortunately.
Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye on your thread!
There is a crack, a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in...
Wow, you have some really professional looking stuff here. Love the style you have. Lot's of anime people don't realise the importance of realism for quite a while, it's cool that you noticed that without guidance.
Those are really good! I can't wait to see more from you.
^keep me going by visiting my sketchbook^
Great start, man! More purty gurlies with purty boobies!
Nice stuff Sinix, especially like the style used in the first set of coloured ones ( I may have said that before!)
Do you have those any bigger btw?
I like some of your style... Especially the first colored pieces as stated by dave...
Its just a personal thing but I hate it when people leave out the eye pupils.
Blah.. internet seems to be down all the time, so I'm gonna post some quick scratchy stuff I did yesterday. Actually, I was just trying to expand a bit on that sketch at the top of the page because I thought it was interesting enough.... plus my sketchbook is all girls and scrawny guys.
Stray: Thanks, yea, the sig is unbearably true.. it's hard enough for my lazy ass to get a pencil in hand and even when I do have one I just sit there for an hour looking at random stuff.
Bad Affliction: Yea, anime can be very charming and evil when you're starting out... realism just seemed so hard, maybe I didn't realize that you had to work hard at it back then.
Davetheoriginal: Thanks, yea, those color ones at the top are actually massive... I just posted small sizes to because they're not part of this current sketchbook.
Jook: Hah, I don't know.. I think leaving out pupils just makes it less human, just a mood thing.
Kinda boring color test.
good stuff. i especially like the 2 colored sceneries and the colored one of the couple. ill totally keep comin back to this sketchbook.
Blegh, I need to do more... I've been trying to do more thumbnails.. get my brain working toward being creative. Trying to slowly get into more ID and environmental stuff... which I guess I'm not accustomed too, should have started splashing around with those types of thumbnails long ago. Damn. Just a small update.
Just a page I filled this morning, watching tv and whatnot.
Hopefully more later/tomorrow. (need to make some thumbnails I actually like, so I can develop them) I'll leave with this: Because it always cracks me up.
that last page was really good, I like the trainstation and the vehicles. sometimes when I can't come up with anything out of my head I'll copy photos from the internet or magazines. Gotta keep building that visual library of shapes and reference.
Wow, already a week?? I guess I got sidetracked with doom3 and whatnot... was able to get back to my sketchbook today, filled acouple pages with gestures and thumbnails. It's nice to randomly mess around with random shapes and thumbnails, but I should probably get more detailed practice in. I still feel terrible about the environment thumbnails.. pretty much just started really trying to make environments this past week or so.. still feeling things out.
the kendo sketches are really good and I like the way you're handling the environment thumbs. The enviro in the top left and the one that's second from the bottom on the right are the ones that look the most solid, the most like real space.
Not getting so much done, but trying to do what I can so I don't give up on this.
I did this speed digital sketch earlier.. trying to come up with a concept for some sort of evil nazi samurai, hah.. I'll probably try to make a detailed pen drawing now that I have a rough idea of the character.
Tossing this in for.. humor? Just having fun in the paintchat with some thumbnail practice and whatnot.
Lol, "meatball", I love you Prostate.
Ok, I've kinda been preoccupied and out of it the past 10 days... but I'm ready to get back to work. I switched back to pen, it's something that happens... every so many months I'll get tired of doing the bulk of my work in either pencil or pen and switch to the other.. always makes me feel fresh when I do. Yea, there are those 3 little sketches on the bottom of the first page that were based off other people's work just while browsing here, insanevisions/marko, not taking credit for those. Anyway, the Daily Sketchbook part of CA is probably my favorite thing on all of the internet.. I love hanging out here. Thank you all for the continual inspiration to draw.
Sinix I really like those environment thumbs and the samurai stuff.
That sword design you did was awesome too.
Thanks, when I use pencil I just use a mechanical pencil (standard .5mm HB) because it's the most comfertable for my style.. and I hate dealing with dull edges. The last pages were done in pen with a micron 0.25mm, which I love (needa get more). Too scan, I just go thru photoshop with 300dpi grayscale settings. Always have to do a quick levels adjustment to get the blacks back to true black.Originally Posted by cthomp
Ah, I really like your art. The last two pages kick ass. And I like your signature.
I'm in the same position, started two years ago, and started with anime style. And switched to realism, but your realism is much better than mine. How long were you drawing anime before you switched to realism?
Cue: Thanks... actually, more realism is something I've only been working at the past 2 or 3 months? I've kind of bounced around on styles for these first two years.. mainly anime for alot of that, there was also a long stretch of time where everything I was drawing had that "jhonen vasquez" vibe to it. But yea, realism is fairly recent.. I don't even know if I'd say realism.. I feel like anything I draw still has some anime features, but I try to do stuff from photo reference when I can for practice.
Anyway.. I'll make a small update with a few more pages. This first page is kinda disappointing, I was struggling alot with everything I was trying for.. it happens.
This was just a thumbnail warmup that I was enjoying.. making thumbnails is always relaxing. Practicing doing the same pose with different genders. Too bad I wandered off from my sketchbook after I finally started to get comfertable.
And finally, just a quick sketch I did right before coming on here... mainly just working on trying to work larger, because I normally draw on such a small scale. Also, I'm STRONGLY considering doing a loose ink style like this for a comic story I've had in my head for awhile. Actually, that top color pic in the first post with the two people was a concept for that comic... the girl is this sketch is the same.
cool stuff... i like the larger drawing a lot. post more.
Sinix, your stuff is very solid. All I can say is keep at it and keep having fun. I keep going thru periods where I get stressed out becuase Im not where I want to be, but then I realize the reason I started drawing in the first place is because I love doing it. Just keep loving it I guess.
I'm diggin that ship design at the end of the last post, great sketches!
wow, you have a whole bunch of pages filled with inky goodness. I really like the densely populated thumbnail images -- it looks like you're looking at the forms between the heads and seeing new shapes there. I think you're handling the environments well, I would keep doing what you're doing now.
One crit tho, you might be getting close to over using the spiky anime hair. It's not that I'm suggesting you never draw a character with hair like that, but I think you should find some photo reference of that hairstyle to freshen up the way you render it.
Thanks for commenting.. yea, I noticed I had been working into a rut with hair. For whatever reason, hair always seems to be an after thought, something I need to practice anyway.
The good news is, I've been keeping this daily.. the bad news is I had planned on submitting at least acouple or even a few pages a day... but I haven't been able to produce much the past days. Anyway.. a page I worked on very slowly while watching Chappelle's show... yea, the bottom right is just a redrawing of the image at the top of the page I did to warm up.
very nice indeed...the colours on the first one remind me of the windwaker style, but i also like your pencils&pens a lot. the only thing i would crit is your profiles of people are very manga, in that the skullshape is unrealistic/wrong. i love the mangastyle, but i hate how they draw the heads (this is also what most people remember most about the style...). anyhows...the chin is quite protruding on a skull, your skulls look more like balls...the chin is "under the ears" sort of idea, as in too far back. a good example of this is on the second from last scan.
im criticizing this because you said you want to get real, from your last posts i dont know if this is still the case....
This last one is very good stuff!!
a tiny off perspective but very
You have a god eye for
creating machinery, that
is always something hard to
find on an artist, it means
you have a good eye to place
detail; make some anatomy studies
and you will get even better.
this links might help ya a bit.
see ya and keep updating
Good stuff. I especially like the ship design, and this page http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../sb090304b.jpg
You seem to be influenced by HPX.
Let me ask you, what goes through your mind when you did that ship design. I mean... did you have a general idea of how it would turn out? Or... were you kinda going by ear?
My hand hurts.
Thanks maxetormer... I'll probably work on some skeletal studies and stuff like that in the future. Hmm.. I'm still new to trying industrial design stuff.. but... I find a decent way to come up with concepts is by simply making random angled metal planes... not connected or anything.. just kinda there.. then your brain somewhat starts seeing designs from that.. you can put connection points in.. start filling it out. When I do thumbnails, I usually don't have any idea before I start actually drawing. I'll be working on that stuff more anyway.
I feel disappointed, I didn't make a submission yesterday, my little streak is over.... I'll get it cranking again.
more cool stuff sinix.. Im just getting warmed up for the t-dome. My 2D skills are slowly being revived after the 5 month break I took. Ive been drawing every night.. but its coming back SOOOO slowly.. In the past ive spent too much time on life drawing gestures and havent learned to render and shade. I like your shading style. The faint circle around the shaded area and straight hatch lines create a kind of tech look that goes well with your subjects. Right now im working on form following lines without the outline around the shaded area. Its hard..
hopefully Ill be able to turn out something cool for the duel. later
Cause if my baby dont love me, I know her sister will...
Yea Michael.. I'm trying to build some momentum... I'll probably wait until the last few days to actually do the sketch for our battle. Although, I'll probably have to dust off the pencil before then. I still haven't thought about what I'll actually draw. But, good luck with that.. I look forward to a good one.
Ok, throwing in a miniscule update for today... it almost feels like I'm being annoying when I don't have much to submit for the day... but I'm just focusing on making sure I have to submit at least something each day.. next month I'll probably just submit large dumps each week instead of little daily stuff.
Great stuff Sinix. You have so much energy in your line work, I love it. Keep laying it down for the underground.
Wow, great work sinix, its very inspiring. Your sketching ability is amazing--- K, enough amazing artwork, time for me to get my ass movin on more sketches!!!

Argh, doh.. so I didn't update for 12 days.. I blame.. something or other..... Ok, it's my fault.. but, time to get this train back on the tracks. Well, maybe not, because I just noticed my pen has been destroyed... I must figure out where to get another one soon! Maybe it's a sign that I should spend some time brushing up my digital painting skills... maybe I'll mess with painter.
Anyway, here's a half-size of my thunderdome entry just so I can make some notes to myself... first off, I am lazy.. I didn't take the time to refine a decent scene beforehand.. in fact, I actually did the final sketch in pen.. and just forced it.. I should have worked out some rough idea in pencils, coulda been more dynamic.
Here's a page I've filled out so far today on my pen's last legs.
Edit, blah... starting to make my attempt at learning painter.. first time using it actually... did a quick digital painting of that sketch on the page right above this...using an acrylic detail brush? I'm not really sure what the cool brushes are in there. I'll need to fiddle with painter more. Lol.. the contrast of this painting completely blows.. I guess I'm a value pussy when I don't have lineart.. I'll work on that. Edited again.. put in a better version.
PS. GRR AT MY 0.35 mm pen... that's the only one I have and it's completely messing me up... I normally use 0.25 mm.... it's amazing how much 0.1 mm can affect you... completely ruins the feel.

Your graphic style is awesome
i am amazed at how you can get such detail while working so small...
Thanks mister, the secret is extremely fine pens.. feels like you're drawing with a razor... that and random lines.
Ahoy, why the crap do I have 4 stars... now I haveto start trying to live up to the 4 star crowd. Reguardless... I'm still without my pen.. so I've been trying speed paints in Painter... still trying to figure out which brushes I like... there's so many choices.... I've been trying to focus on drawing skies.. haven't been able to achieve the dynamic type skies I would like to...
Hey.. I just realized how early in the day it is.. maybe I'll get a few more speedpaints in before night... anyway, still working at painter, trying to get comfertable. Normally I would have been playing Final Fantasy 5 in the morning.. but I beat it yesterday, yay... absolutely great game.
I saved this one at poor ass sucky quality, oops.
I'm not sure if anything above will show up... photobucket is apparently having trouble and it seems I was lucky enough to have an account go "missing"... hopefully it's not gone for good.. they claim things will be fixed by tomorrow.
Anyway.. another dose of painter practice type stuff... started off kind of crappy, never really got the right brushes on this.
But.. decided to try some random vehicle based stuff.. it's extremely fun to just kinda work out stuff like this.. 3 variants on the same basic premise.
Last edited by Sinix; October 8th, 2004 at 09:23 AM.
wow these are cool! keep it up.. and that last vehicle design is killer. I like the sharp spikey fins and "eye" head light.. makes it look organic.
Cause if my baby dont love me, I know her sister will...
Thanks for the positive feedback Michael.
Today I did yet another cloudscape + vehicle painting and a quick sketch to mess around with speed skin tones.. I'm not that great with doing sketches on my tablet, but decent enough to let me practice colors. I think this is my favorite vehicle one so far, mainly because I forced myself to go darker.
sweet stuff! i like it in the way that its so different from my style (and class ) i love the busy sketchpages...

Thanks for the encouragement hurricane, I'm definitely a fan of your work.
So, I got around to replacing my pen finally.. with a few extras just in case. So, looks like I'm back to my sketchbook and pen doodles. I'll definitely need to keep working at the painter stuff here and there. Anyway, a page today... not as busy as most of my sketchbook pages... messed up some things.. that girl's head and neck piss me off.. but that's part of pen sketching.
Time flies.. guess I've been neglecting to update.. not that I haven't been drawing, but whatever... here's some noodling from the past day.
And, I've been kinda brainstorming out a video game project I've been trying to get going with some people, mainly a top down 2d shooter.. will hopefully go somewhere... I was thinking it would be neat to play in some type of walking tank.. so I've been making little sketches to see if I can stir any good ideas.
whoa. piqued by your thunderdome entry, my curiouslty had to stop on by.
I must say...this stuff is ILL to the n-th degree!
I self-published a book on the fundamentals of drawing from life.
Oooo this thread is so hot right now.
Love the style man...sketchbook pages are rockin'
def on my "visit regularly" list.
Sketchbook be here...
Thanks for the support guys.. I'll have to get this moving back on a daily schedule. One of my harddrives had died, so I had been busy getting a dvd burner.. getting that to work, backing up all my art and stuff, trying to get everything fixed. Oh well...
