    Dom Ross's Happy lil Sketchbook

Hey guys, This is my first ever post on Conceptart.org!!

I'm an artist from Ontario Canada, just wanted to share my sketchbook with the fine people of CA. Feedback/ Critiq's are very appreciated and you can be as blunt as possible, and I actually prefer that since I am trying to improve.

Most of the stuff on my sketchbook currently is 1-2 years old and I have been drawing from a young age, but started seriously about 5 years ago. I don't wanna post images from back then since it's kind of embarrassing. About 2 years ago I started improving dramatically after doing figure drawing and after looking back at my old work it gave me motivation to keep going. I want to keep this momentum and move forward to make a career out of this.

I really like the traditional figures you have there, my only advice would be to watch your edges on your digital paintings. Try to go in there and sharpen a couple of them to keep it from being all blurred, otherwise everything looks like its on a good track!

I swear one day I'll be good. I swear one day I will be proud of my work. When that day comes, I'll need to kick my ass and try harder.

Definitely, being edge-conscious will improve your work. Experiment with brushes
Your studies are awesome, good rendering! I really love the 3rd, 4th, and 5th life drawings in the first post. There is a lot of live and volume in them.
    Cool imagination stuff too!
    Keep it up!

Thanks alot for stoping by guys and for pointing out one of my flaws, I've been told in the past that I should clean up my edges/ and use a smaller brush. I have been using that advice in my more recent paintings, but I still get lazy from time-to-time lol.

I have to break the habit one of these days!!!

jow dom! thank for stopping by my place, and for the great advice. and what a wonderful sketchbook you have here. love, love that black panther, and those last figures on paper are awesome too!
I do notice some of your stuff by heart sometimes lacks structure. it especially shows in the faces. the parts float around the face instead of being locked to a precise 3d grid. yeah. add those vanishing points and practice those cube I guess. im not any better there; I hate practising cubes!

SKETCHBOOK. you'll visit me. I'll visit you, we'll have a tea party. with arts and shit. it'll be dreamy. stop by.

Yea Ashess I always had problems with structure and faces, especially with womens faces I dont know why.
I am also very bad at dynamic posing/forshortening, but that all comes down to my knowledge of structure.

Thanks for stopping by and giving some feedback, its very appreciated.

I'm gonna commit to posting new stuff everyday and I must take about 1 hour or more to do studies so I can produce better artwork and have a greater understanding of structure, composition and improve my line quality and posing.

I wanna get better dammit! =)

Great update! Everything looks really appealing. Good structure as well as flow to the gestures. I like the statement too. It's good to identify what you want to do~ I wish you luck, you know you have it in you!

    Thanks once again.
After being out of school for about a year its hard for me to get out of my comfort zone and I need to push myself to create challenges and raise the bar higher in order to get better. In school they make you to do things which seem trivial or wouldn't normally do, but actually benefited me in the longrun. The good thing about drawing is that you get better just by doing it more often, but the rate in which you improve multiplies if you draw out of your comfort zone.

you seem to be doing really well, but good luck to you to.

Very true. The more and more I've pushed myself to do challenging and different things the faster I've noticed a progression in my work. Think that goes for all things in life though. Anyway, good studies going on and you're studying all the right things. It might seem counter intuitive, but the thing that pushed my figure drawings along was to study perspective, and I did so like a mad man. Maybe it'd help you as well. Keep up the hard work.

Thats actually some good advice, I never practice perspective. It makes sense why you got better doing perspective because there's underlying structure which is affected by perspective in figures aswell as any other thing on this planet, though others are not as subtle. Since i'm struggling with foreshortening, perspective studies should help and either way it wouldn't hurt. Also in my story boarding classes I always had problems with characters not feeling grounded b/c of my crap perspective and it could of been corrected by adjusting the angle slightly lol.

yo dom. good thing practicing faces. working on that myself. these are no rev I think? you seem to make the area between nose and chin a bit small. on pretty much all the faces. if this is with rev its easy to check. just overlay your drawing over the rev.

its been such a long time since I last updated my sketchbook, so I think its time to get back in the habit and maybe it will get me drawing more actively than I am currently. Name: IMG_84053988575047.jpeg

I almost forgot to draw something today so I just re-worked the last sketch since I had some time.

Thanks allot for the commenting in my sketchbook. I think I like the studies, the digital painting of the panther being my favorite because of the use of color. Painting black coats can be difficult to get right, keep up the good work !

Critiques on my work always welcome!!
