    Thanks for the encouragement Hyver!
so many things going on right now that I can't promise the next update will be soon...but who knows what art may result from procrastinating at the other things I should be doing!

    peace,

bizarre, as much as you would want to bang a picture of robs sister, could you keep the comments to more of a constructive nature. i would hate for somone to talk about your mom in the same fashion.
hey rob, do you have any more pencil sketches? i find you have a better hand at that... though your digital skills are improving.

the affore mentioned is completely false and should not be taken litterally. the views expressed by lil'Tao are not nessesarily the views of me or anyone else living, dead or undead. this has been a paid for advertisement for the fat trapper

Ah, Rob, I've looked throught your sketchbook before, but I haven't had a change to comment yet.
The OC drawing of the guy with the dreads is sweet--you did a great job on the facial structure.
I also like the woman done in the red tones.

keeeeeep posting and I'll keep looking!

hurricane: awesome! glad you can take the time!

biz:arg...I work with colours when I have time...for now though I'll just keep studying the theory even if I don't have time to practice it. I can paint much faster in my mind after all.
oh, and for future reference, I kill anyone that talks about my sister like that.

lilTao/Matt: here's some pencil stuff....I'm more in a pencil phase right now too...not that these are particularly reflective of any of the improvements I find myself making, ha...
I tend to go in phases, from digital to natural media and back again....they help eachother a lot.
I'm particularly glad you see some improvement in the digi stuff though.

    dadamafia: thanks dude!

emily: glad you like those ones...they're reflective of the direction I'm trying to go right now...having more expression in my work.
these new ones don't really reflect it that much...but it's something that my awareness is growing to accomodate more and more in my art I think.
    thanks for stopping by!

hey rob, some really nice stuff here. i like this last update a lot, that portrait on the left in the first page is really nice. the hips on that chick are bothering me a lot though, maybe if you defined more of the leg, or if thats how it was then i think its how it is coming out of the underwear on the inner thigh, seems to me like it should be overlapping that if that is the angle of the leg. of course, i never saw the ref though. heh
one thing i did notice throughout though, especially with these yelling folks you've got going, is the teeth in your pictures seem kind of off. like in lots of them they seem to be somewhat flat. i was looking through one of mentlers threads today and he had a good system for doing teeth. it was somethign like "2, 1, 2, 3" where if you start in between the front teeth, top or bottom, and go either direction, you have 2 incisors, which are flat bottomed with the two corners, 1 canine, with a single larger defined point on it, 2 bicuspids which have got 2 corners, and then 3 molars at the back, which wont be noticed as much, but have 4 corners.
i'll find his picture he used to explain it and leave a link to it here, because i dont think i explained very well.
anyways, peace man, keep it up
    -nate

ah yes. here it is. hopefully this helps

    thanks Nate.
You're right...there are some screwy bits on that chick's hips...probably would've been better if I had used some reference...but alas, I'm too lazy most of the time to find any.
I haven't had any lifedrawing classes for over a year now, and it's showing, lol.

totally right on the teeth comment too...I'll definitely check out Mentler's stuff...it's always good and informative.

I'm currently writing a movie script with a few friends. This is a WIP for one of the scenes early in the film at a house party.
I'm fairly pleased with the progress so far, especially not having used any ref.
Colour is always a big challenge to me, so it's fun to be succeeding a bit.
Anyways, it's still a WIP, so unless there's any huge glaring problems, no need to crit...it's mostly for the sake of updating...
I think it might be a bit too saturated...but eh, we'll see where it goes...

So last night I was at my friend's place listening to my 2 favourite musicians jamming in his music room...it was absolutely indescribably beautiful.
I sat on his computer with his eentsy graphire3 for a short while and this is what happned:

and here's the wpe, since I discovered that I actually have webspace through my ISP:
    http://www3.telus.net/robslanina/Sasquatch.wpe

seriously...the pic may not reflect it but it was one of the most joyous nights of my life.

idea for color sketches from reference

if you're not the type who can squint and blur your vision till the reference is a hopeless blur, use the filter to blur it like 500 pixels or something.

paint that color down across the whole piece, using it as a ground.

since the human eye can percieve differences more readily than accuracies, you'll have an easier time pinpointing where the colors of the ref deviate from the ground color of the original image.

just a suggestion, my little custard slurper, you...

    good sketchbook!

just had a fleeting glance through it but the oly thing that jumps out at me is your stormy horse picture - nice atmosphere, but I think the horse is actually way too small - unless it is a pony.

Really diggin the style in which you work, you have a good understanding of what makes an image "look right." Your knowledge of painting is good I think, but if you really wanted to, you have all that's there to take that knowledge to another/the next level. Have you ever worked in oils? If you continue to work in digital means, working in oil every now and then REALLY helps, ie, developing an eye for color (which you have, but should nurture), and working in layers, as well as painting with the end in mind. Good work too on the corrections of your anatomy mistakes, albeit small ones. Its been a while since you last posted here, but I had to post something on this thread. Go baby go.

There will come a time when you think everything is finished. That will be the beginning.

Hey guys...haven't posted in ages...haven't been drawing a whole lot lately...
anywho, my friends in the band Anything August have asked me to do a cover and a 2 page mini-comic to be accompanied by a li'l poem written by the band.
They told me that I could offer a free CD to someone if I didn't wanna colour it myself.
    http://www.purevolume.com/anythingaugust/
you can listen to most if not all the songs on their new EP on the purevolume site.

so yeah, I have the first page of the mini comic drawn...it's meh, since I'm getting rusty not drawing as much as I should be...here it is:

so, yeah, if anyone wants to give colouring it a shot, go for it...I can only promise a cd to whoever does the best job(on all 3 pics...this one, the cover and the 2nd page of the mini comic)
I realize that a cd isn't much...but you guys all do awesome colouring for no money too, so gimme a break...I'm too slow to do the colours myself!

here's the PSD for the first mini-comic page for anyone who wants to do it:
    http://www3.telus.net/robslanina/A2Page1.psd

the cover and the 2nd page should be coming soon.

    Thanks for looking guys!
oh and it'll be the standard 12x12cm or 4.75x4.75inch cd booklet size...so if that factors into your level of detail or anything...yeah...

...if anyone wants more details feel free to ask!

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    Biz: 2 Dragons indeed!!!

Ferocia: Thank you! your comments are very encouraging! I have been slowly getting into oils...but I think I need to do some more research....people seem to be able to blast out oil paintings in a matter of hours...I take months....mostly because of neglect lately...too much on my plate at the moment.
Nevertheless, I will forge onward! thanks again!

Shatterdome: I never posted on polykarbon...mostly just the Top Cow Message Boards...glad you enjoy what you see!

    hey Rob,
its been a while. i like the composition on the mini-comic, i even tried to give it a colourn' but my painting skills are less than excellent, so it looked pretty bad... though i havent quit trying (trying to paint, that is... i quit painting your pic though)
anyway, along time ago you told me to get a sketchbook online, so i did...
click on my link if you want to see the sketchbook.

oh, and how do you get it to say "sketchbook" rather than that garbled up mess that it show there:

the affore mentioned is completely false and should not be taken litterally. the views expressed by lil'Tao are not nessesarily the views of me or anyone else living, dead or undead. this has been a paid for advertisement for the fat trapper

Matt! I checked out your SB...cool stuff. Gotta update it! not that I've been a very good example of keeping updated...haha.

anyhow, I never got any takers on the colouring for the cd stuff, so I decided to digi-paint it all myself.
Got a slight extension from the band due to stuff that happened with them...
here's a WIP of the cover:

    enjoy!

update on the cd cover and mini comic thing...
the cover for the cd has been updated....I procrastinate too much....it's got a ways to go yet...

and I didn't like that comic so far, so I redid the page....and I did the 2nd page...but it sucks, so I'm redoing that too...look for it soon....it's just sloppy at the moment...putting it together roughly just to show the guys....getting the ok on it before I take it any farther.

and if you're bored by my art, go here: www.purevolume.com/anythingaugust/
or here: www.battleofthebands.com/anythingaugust/ and have a listen to a track or 2. The album is going to be much better...supposedly they spent a lot of time doing more mastering on the tracks...which already sound pretty good. I think they have a myspace addy too...not sure though.
And of course, www.anythingaugust.com for their main site.

Very nice work. I especially like the guy who is falling backwards. The girl you painted is awesome. Looks just like the photo.

    Darkchild & Morgoth: thanks guys!

so yeah...the band got an email from a rep at Immortal(the label that supposedly first signed bands like Korn and Incubus)....they have opted to delay the release of their cd until they find out whether or not they have a chance at getting signed....if they get signed they'll have enough material to release a cd on a new label they figure....
...and well...the singer is difficult to please....the band all seems to like the design so far...but rather than put up with the singer being ticked, they're giving hiom creative control...so I'll be redoing the whole thing probably. He's going to do some thumbnails of what he wants for me.
He wanted me to keep trying....but I told him that I wouldn't keep shooting in the dark trying to please him. So yeah...he's going to figure out what he wants now and then get back to me....the way it ought to be! haha.
If it was a paying gig I might have done it differently, but eh...lol

I see improvements! the naked Domai lady on page 1 feels rejected...you should give her another go, I'll bet you can do much better. Try another picture if the old one feels stale...more important to have fun, than to bore yourself.
