for an IRC challenge with Myself, Intern, Zebzfree, Rook, and Bizarre...and I think maybe a few more.
Subject: design a character that might fit in the world of Marko's Degenesis books.
I think I may do another tomorrow...time permitting, but here's my first crack at it anyhow.

oh, and I got a 4 star rating now! woo hoo! guess that means it's time to turn it up a notch or 2. See if I can earn another yet. I certainly feel like I've been making good progress lately.

    Thanks for looking!

cool stuff man. the post you did for the marko challenge, I didnt read the text first, and saw the pic, and though "this looks like something marko would draw"...then i read it, bam. great work on that, you carried the idea and the piece really nicely...

I self-published a book on the fundamentals of drawing from life.

i like these very hip and cool. one suggestion, shadowing would help define how your figures look (i need to work on this to) but otherwize these are cool. do more of those college student ones. i like those

Jetpack: Thanks man! Glad to hear that! I must be on the right track! heh

Alphonse: Yeah...shadows... I said before that I'd try and work on them more...but I haven't really. You're right though. Another kick in the butt. Need to do more shadows/value experiments.
I'm actually doing a study in painter that I haven't had a chance to finish yet...black & white. Plus I'm doing a challenge with DigitalGannon all black & white digital...so that should help too.
Glad you like those college students as well...I feel that that's where my strengths are...portraying ordinary people. Fantasy/Sci Fi stuff is hard for me as I'm not as deeply immersed in that kind of stuff the way I ought to be pursuing the goals that i am.

here's a quick Witchblade/Sara Pezzini sketch from my sketchbook.

I'll try and have more to update soonish.

    Thanks for looking!

Cool stuff here Rob, youve defintly nailed those marko characters. excellent topic to do i mite add, very cool. The only thing i can find wrong is that some of ure colour sketches look a bit pale, and ure pencil sketches lack any real contrast or rendering, would be really cool just to some shadow to bring out some forms and stuff.

Good stuff though man keep it up.

    Thanks Andy...I know I gotta work on rendering & stuff..oi....I'm so baad...or lazy...who knows.

anyways, here's a WIP for a drawoff I'm in with Digital Gannon.
2(or more) Riders charging off into battle.
black & white only, digital, at least a minimal BG and a 5 hour total time spent working limit(can be in short segments adding up to 5 hours)
I'm at like 1.5 or 2 now. I think I'm gonna end up going way over the time limit.
Lemme know what you all think:

the atmosphere is excellent but your anatomy is something to be deisred...

i had to learn how to draw a horse last week, and i found that there are a ton of horse and rider pics all over the internet... GOOGLE SEARCH
if you can fix it now your pic will shine... because in the immortal words of whats his nuts from animation 100, cant remember his name for the life of me, but you know who im talking about... you cant shine a turd

The latest pic looks like it has a lot of potential. You might want to darken up the foreground horse. Right now that half circle shape thats cropped at the bottom on the left half is coming to the front of the image. I'd lighten it up a little. The practice with the Domai picture...her face made me laugh..the expression you put on her is so scary.

Matt-thanks for the drawover. I definitely gotta work more with reference. And yeah, Jeff Shyluck...can't shine a turd....classic stuff. Can't believe I paid thousands for some of the stuff we learned there...but good times nonetheless.

Joeslucher-Yeah, I think I will darken that foreground horse up some more yet...and I'll probably experiment with some blurriness on it too...haven't gotten around to it yet though.
And with the Domai chick...heh, yeah...a lot of screwiness went on with her...the face especially. I have a hard time rendering faces as it is, but with the resolution as low as it was when I was working it was even harder. I'm doing a B/W image in Painter again in my spare time...higher res on that one, so I hope to remedy some of my suckiness with that, haha.

Xia-As always, your encouragement means a lot to me. Your work is constantly inspiring me to keep improving! Thanks!

anyways, here's another 45 min or so on the Digital Gannon drawoff piece:

some more WIPs on the horsie pic...haven't done much art at all this week...been so sick.
    here we go:

and some verrry random OC stuff I did with Genysis. It's crappy, but at least you get to look at something besides my teensy progression so far on the other pic.

aaand what the heck, a WIP from a photoreffed pic I was doing before I started the horsie one.....tryin' to learn painter more.

the proportions are off a li'l but it's a wip.

I totally have to quit starting things that I don't finish.

you should read byrne hogarth Dynamic Figure drawing. your biggest problem with the nudes is you have two nipples facing the viewer and in real life that never happens. A straight on pose will have the nipples pointing off at diagonals. never forward. Otherwise only one nipple faces the viewer at a time.

    late.

Ryan: yep. I really should blow the dust off my anatomy books...I'm getting rusty. Definitely miss taking lifedrawing classes. Kept me up on that stuff.

Jackal: thanks dude! glad you like!

so here we go; a self portrait, and another (small)update on the horsies pic:

your head looks fatter than usual. if i didnt know you i would say great self portarait, looks just like i think you do... unless you got fat since i last saw you... are you fat now? like matt fatt? not me matt, but ass matt fatt matt who isnt fat anymore. but other than thatt, the pic looks exactly like you.

in your storm scene, you have some good detail on the character. you should have more depth in the bg, everything feels flat. also your horse still has some bad anatomy. you should look at the skeletal structure.
    excellent emotion on the rider.

i think im gonna post my stuff soon, so you can get a chance to pick on me! yay!

lol, well, I'm not fat, but I've actually been eating food for a change! haha. Gotta love the good ol' school days though...
Stupid other Matt STILL hasn't sent me my Fallen Night stuff that he convinced me to leave with him "just for a few days". arg. And he hasn't replied to me the last few times I messaged him on MSN.

I'm still planning to fix up the horse anatomy....and I've only juuuust started really thinking about how I'm gonna handle the bg....which is kind of ridiculous I think....generally you're supposed to work from the bg to the fg....oh well. Still fun.

Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff, (not fat)Matt.

heh, nice update rob, keep it up, only crit here is to drop a little shadow to place her down and stop her from floating, u did that around her feet, but it's up to you on the shadow..other than that it looks like your really getting strong with lines, what i mean is you don't seem jittery(good thing), i really like how you've improved, but are you going to work any further on the painting of the guy on the horse?..i think it would have turned out nice...any whoo....time to stop jabbering..keep it up..your doing great

hurry up and finish your painting, id like to see your "mad skillz" with a brush.
oh by the way, i re-found all the sketches you left in my care, and since im moving again, i finally threw them away. only half of them were good anyway.
