Using published work as reference....copyright issues?

I've done a few paintings using a published photo as a reference (don't have an example readily available) but it usually ends up without any real semblance to the original. But it got me thinking, are there any issues in using a published work as an inspiration/reference to your own? What about an interpretation of a painting in your own style?

    I'll post an example soon.

    like now.
