Character of the Week #327
Jadis - The White Witch
Deadline - Sunday, May 26 10PM GMT
In the C.S. Lewis book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first book in the The Chronicles of Narnia series, we are introduced to the evil
White Witch, Jadis. During her reign over Narnia she began the Long Winter, a curse that magically forced Narnia into a hundred-year state
of frozen snow and ice. The curse lasted all through her reign, thus earning her the title, the "White Witch".
At seven foot tall, Jadis was a strikingly beautiful and Amazonian woman, with long black hair and paper white skin. She had an excellent sense
of style, and always dressed in an extravagant manner that showed off her power and status, this included flowing romanesque robes, furs
and a golden crown. Jadis also carried a magic wand which would give her the power to turn anyone into stone.
This week we would like you to design Jadis - The White Witch.
- Gender is Female
- Genre is Fantasy
- Please include her wand
Focus Challenge: Gesture and Faces (Optional & not required for entry into the poll)
- Put her in a pose that reflects her superiority over the kingdom

- Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
- At least 3/4 of the character must be visible

going to join this one, been practicing expressions for a bit ^ ^
just a example l found that really shows off a lot of what this chow is asking for, sans wand. probably going to go for that same perspective.
(sorry for the large image, don't know how to scale it :<

I read in the sticky that a little bit of work in progress is appreciated in these posts so other artists and moderators know who is entering. Also, since I'm completely new here I figured it'd be rude to just slap a picture in the finals where people would be like... Who the hell is this person? So, I'm Emily, I just joined yesterday. I was a bit disappointed to miss the Artemis CHoW, but this is even better as I LOVED the Narnia Chronicles when I was a kid and the white witch must be one of the most iconic she-villains ever. Anyway, here is my sketch, Photobucket scaled it down a lot so parts of it may be almost invisible. Comments/Suggestions always welcome Since I can't afford traditional college/art classes I am here to improve my skills so I like criticism, as long as it's constructive.
Just in case I fail at posting the image correctly...
Thanks, and hi again!
Is it Lissandre from LoL?
@jsn: the head seems a little small, other than that it's cool!
here are my sketches, I think I'll go with #2 or #3

Yes. That is Lissandra from League of Legends. I think he was just showing an example of the pose/perspective he wants to go for. However, Meteor Panda, next time if an image is super huge, just take it into photoshop and scale it down.
Welcome Emily! You are probably one of the first new comers to actually take the time and read the sticky threads. We really appreciate that. If you have any questions regarding ChoW, please don't hesitate to ask! Just to give you a heads up as to what is expected of our participants, is just follow the guidelines and properly submit a final when you are finished. We also strongly urge people to post frequent WIPS of their work and especially the initial design phase, just in case they go off topic. Other than that, have fun with it.
hello friends, here are my silhouettes and wip
still not sure about some parts of her dress, like gloves. i thought that that'll be cool to add furs. or maybe it's better to change color of her dress? damn, she is WHITE Witch, what was i thinking about? i was so exited while drawing and completely forgot about it... anyway, want to share it with you)
as always, i'll be happy to hear advices and crits!
Emily Estelle, for me it looks like mr. Tumnus's legs are a little bit wrong, check out goat's anatomy, they have an additional knee, i think it must be stressed. (http://www.thestonetable.com/images/...r__Tumnus1.jpg here you can see it)
i see you used ref for your pic; try to build construction lines anyway, it'll help you to understand structure better!
I'm not experienced artist, but hope that's helpfull!
@NickiBeats: nice anatomy!
This is my first time doing this too btw, so if I do sth wrong pls correct me :p
here's the next wip
(I never know how to transit from sketch to rendering so every time I do it differently, it sucks :/ )
@FlyingPenguin: B looks neat
meh, turns out terrible :/
Thanks, yeah Mr. Tumnas's legs were definitely off, I was too tired to fix it Long day in the garden: I'm sore in places I forgot I had! I've remedied it now though, thank you for the suggestion and the link to a reference photo. I'm in the process of changing a few things so I'll update soon. I really like the dress in your sketch, its definitely a statement piece, something belonging to a powerful woman.
Just posting a random update, I changed a bit. I'm looking forward to seeing everybody's work, there are some really great artists floating about here. I've been nosing around in various sketch books. :o
Trying out the lighting and expressions
dunno if I'll go all the way, but in case I do here's some concepts...I'm thinking a combination of the three in some way...
Update - I was wondering if it was ok to have her wand as a staff to lean on.
Emily, yay, those legs look perfect now
@matcha: nice, she kinda looks like chess figure
My intial sketch. Trying to get to grips with the colour palette.
I really love the expression on her face. It's like "If you so much as breath in my direction I'll turn you into a lawn ornament."
something for start~
here is mine so far. may attach her to like a icy moutain tip or somthn. still got to add the bear fur claws etc.
white witch initial sketch,
chronicles of narnia looks cool
maybe should read it
That series of books really is worth a read, even as an adult. I still remember them fondly, and its been years since I've read them.
I really like your sketch. If I can make a suggestion: Jadis is not your typical witch, so her face which is currently a bit ..well, witchy, should probably look regal: Think of a very manipulative, cruel queen who has usurped the throne from somebody else. I'm not sure if that's of any help to you, but if you haven't read the books, or watched the movies it'd be easy to think traditional witch.
Awesome starts from everyone. I'm going for a start basic and add all the pretties in as I go approach. Finding it very fun ^^
My Sketchbook Please take a look, I value all feedback and there may be virtual cookies in it for you.

Hi everyone, this is my initial rough design as well as a fix up on the anatomy of my character.
I'm currently working on the color now.
