    Sculpture: Making keys?

I'm getting more into sculpture lately (super sculpey for now, until I can get a decent workshop going), and I've noticed some of the more professional sculptors cut their sculpts and work on the removed bits individually. How is this done? I have a hard time just sculpting without cutting into the aluminum I used to bulk up the sculpture, let alone carving a key!

Two lengths of square-section brass tube, of matching sizes that make one fit inside the other tightly. The smaller one makes the plug, the bigger one makes the socket. The square cross-section ensures that the plug doesn't rotate while it is in the socket.

Your best shot at finding such tube is probably online.

P.S. I'd recommend to use soft steel wire, not aluminum. More resilient and sturdy, and you can solder it unlike aluminum.
