According to Vincent van Gogh, the famous expressionist painter who cut one ear by itself, is art equal to human + nature.

Hi Chris. The wedding will have to wait while we find out about art.

I don't believe it is a good question for artists because every answer you get will limit you in finding out by yourself. I can however answer directly WHEN it is art. When someone sees a painting and says this is art.. it will be .. so it is. so that is art! OF course other people look at the same thing saying it is shit! But that is how relative art is! Last week I saw a painting that was just a blank canvas. But the beholder/owner liked it for it being the pinnacle of ambivalence.

Gibi: So when one person says something is art and another says it is not... What is it? Both things at the same time? Half art, half not art? Neither?
What you are saying, particularly as you use the post modern litany of 'art is relative', is that art is meaningless. A belief endorsed by your last statement.

Actually the opposite! Lets say two people stand in front of a painting. Both are different human beings so had different conditioning, their own influences. For one it is good for the other not as much. It depends on what you've been exposed to before. And no not half art, half not art but just art for one and non art for the other. That doesn't make it meaningless. It's like trying to share your insights. For one it is obvious while the other didn't think of it like that before.

You are saying it is subjective. And that is the same as saying there is no consensus as to what it is. Consensus is a prerequisite for the establishment of meaning.

And this had long been my point as I try to teach Chris. The word art has lost its power. It used to be a powerful word but now we cannot corral it except to mold it to our own ways of thinking. Now I'll cry.
