Well that's kinda disheartening. I feel pretty bad for those animators laid-off. :/

That's certainly depressing, considering all the talent those guys amass.

Well hopefully they can find work in a new studio that will actually use their talents. Disneys been talking about and I thought they already did awhile back close their 2D section of the studios. They were working on a film the Ice Queen or some title like that and that was canceled as well.

It's not the first time they've closed their doors and it won't be the last.
I think the real shame is they only put out that one princess movie, since the last time they shut down and reopened. Princess movies are outdated because they rely on parents that are comfortable with raising a princess. Disney had that base covered decades ago. It's like if you were out trick'or'treating and repeatedly hit one house over and over.

I think the biggest shame is nobody else has the stones to step up to the plate and make a decent feature length film. 3D isn't what makes Pixar and dreamworks successful, it's the morally balanced storytelling that appeals to EVERYBODY. Meaning the parents want to see it as much as the kids. Limiting it to bratty daughters is selling themselves too short.

Titmouse is probably the only American company that comes through with top of the line hand drawn animation and they only have a small niche within a niche in mind.

Except this time the people who were laid off were the top-dogs of the 2D department, some of whom have been there for decades. There's no getting these kind of people again.

It's no lose really though, nobody in the industry really expected Disney to produce any new, worthwhile 2D feature anyway.
Now these talents are free to do what they want, and I think we'll be seeing some cool indie projects popping up.

HunterKiller-Totally agree. I'm not sure if this is still the case, but Disney used to OWN their artists and they could not create their own IPs or even sell their own paintings. If that's still the case Disney has been spending a fortune, just to hold talent back.

It's probably the time to look at other studios or even fund your own, in the animation field. People shouldn't depend of Disney like an old childhood dream.

    Yes.
I think it's terrible all these wonderful people lost their jobs they worked hard at. But I am excited to see what they will come up with on their own.

That's a shame, I hope someone revives the old classic animation style on day, even though it seems like a lot more work then modern animation.

Well, at least John K has Cans Without Labels in development, which can be considered a hopeful sign that traditional animation methods are still viable.
