Spartan Camp #261 - 50 gestures + Optional "Long Figure Study"

    Name: TSCbanner_temp.jpg
Views: 597
Size: 193.8 KB

Deadline: Sunday the 21th of April.

In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Long Figure Study", in any medium.

    Background
We have a little longer this week (see second post). We'll make use of that time and take the opportunity to perform a longer study.

    Exercise
This weeks' optional study will be a long figure study from reference. The approach is rather simple.
Start by finding a good quality image of a figure, possibly high-resolution. I'll be adding possible reference sources shortly. The figure can be clothed or nude, coloured or in black/white. Take some time for sketching, and post work in progress shots if possible. This way we can offer critique along the way, which is a big advantage. We have some more time, so we can spend a little more time on refining as well.

    Inspiration
Here's some inspiration that may apply to the current optional study.

Quick post, I'm editing this today.

These forums were down for a while again. I hope the forums will be more stable, since this is quite a bother.

I extended the deadline slightly. To offset that, we got a challenging optional study!

Yeah. I've got reference links and everything ready to go but I'm unable to edit my post. Getting errors.

I'm seeking a different approach to gesture drawing, so this is a confused post. :p
For the long study I'm still doubting between a photo study or a master study. Mmh.

Hey guys, I thought I could chip into the camp as well. Here is a collection of 30 sec gestures from today. I scaled it all down from 6 'segments', original dimension of each segment is 3000x2000 I think.

    Nice work everyone so far.

Having a break from my wacom and photoshop this week.
None of these I timed, I know they all took over an hour but not sure exactly how long.
    1st pastels
    2nd mechanical pencil
    3rd watercolours

The forums wont let me upload any images. So just pasting the links lol sorry.

Really nice gestures already! Working hard to free up some time so that I may add some gestures and critique.

It seems the forum is not very cooperative at the moment, especially the uploader. I'm sure they're busy fixing that. Currently I'm also trying to get the Spartan Camp thumbnail updated. It's taking a while because I can't do that myself, and the mods seem quite occupied.

Hello, everyone. I'm new to all of this, so please bear with me and feel free to offer advice if I'm posting incorrectly or doing anything wrong, etc. Here is my start to the Optional "Long Study", clearly a work-in-progress. The reference is also included (from noah parrell blogspot dot com).

By the way, it's really helpful seeing other submissions for the gesture drawings. I discovered this site about a month ago and have been watching ever since.

Hi! Nice to meet you all! This is my first post on ConceptArt.org, though I've had this account for a while now. Never really thought about using it until now. I want to be in the animation industry someday soon, and I figure the Spartan challenge would be a good way to improve drawing quickly.

I did these in about 6-7 hours in one sitting. Gestures from the movie Groundhog Day, baseball, and dance poses.

Man I had a massive break from figure studies! I was doing an animation course which took up all my spare time, but now I am getting back in the swing of things

Awesome work so far guys and girls. Especially love those traditional studies from Animare!

So far this week I have been active!:

Studies from posemaniacs (30 secs) and untimed drawing/start of greyscale from (http://artists.pixelovely.com/practi...ure-drawing/):

And these were from the life drawing session on Tuesday:

While I was waiting for a friends I drew some people in the cafe and passing by on the street:

    Some quick notes:
FlashbacK: loving your output man, you keep going out like there's no tomorrow. That's the winners' attitude!
Just make sure you don't get into the same rythm every time, try to break things up and experiment.
Ancientdrake: This brother knows how to draw! Nice work, one particular pose in there that seems odd, the upper body is drawn like a square, it sticks out as your other work is very organic.
Mellorine: You've got the same ambition as I do, and looking at your drawings you seem to be confident in those gestures. They are all consistent in style and proportions. Are these screenfreezes (stills) or are these as you were watching tv?

Thanks, Hamorage! These are all screenfreezes, which I'm most comfortable with. I should really try moving drawings but they go by so quick. And I could tell that you're into animation too from the way your gesture drawings too, haha. I can always tell who's into it from the way their drawings are because there's a certain "caricature"-ish feel to them, which is by no means a bad thing. Took a look at your creative blog too, and I think your line drawings are your strongest point. Check out Inkthinker/Ben McSweeney, he does the same kind of thing that you're doing. Did you go to school to learn art by any chance?

    I'm sorely out of practice.....

30 second gestures were really difficult to do. Didn't have any objective in mind except draw draw draw.

Yay Hamorage it's great to see you back. I really like the characters you've done from life.

I couldn't log on last night but I did these yesterday.
Charcol and white pastel using reference.
Second picture is from imagination... Good job I start a perspective course on wednesday

Notes; Very inspiring work this week everyone!

Flashback, love the quick poses. I wish you had time to upload longer ones (evil uploader,it gave me a lot of trouble too).

embee, some of the poses have a good sense of pose and anatomy in them. It looks like you've done your share of muscle/form study. I'd love to see what you'll do with longer poses.

HederaHiberna, It's a good idea to change drawing approach. I like what you've done with silhouette, quick gestures and stick figures. You could add a bit more details

ps Love the color study, the pose is loose and dynamic.

ancientdrakem, awesomness. Those are a lot of 30 sec gestures! I'd love to see 1 min and 2 min poses as well.

Animare, really good work on the long poses! The last batch has somewhat long legs in relation to torso (middle pose), but the poses and shading are top notch. Please keep inspiring us!

ShadowMagic, thanks for sharing the blog link. That pic is going into my *cough* reference folder *cough* but srsly love the way you analysed the forms and dimensions. Great construction work.

Mellorine, welcome to Spartan Camp! Hope your stay will be enjoyable Great debut btw, love the variety in your gestures. You translated the sense of motion very well, as well as amount of details in each figure.

Hamorhage, bravo good sir, bravo. Crazy motion in those lines and awesome long poses, especially the digitally rendered one.

    Hope your class went well!

The new attachment manager is weird ( I don't like it)

+ 10 more, 1 minute- proportions are really off.

Thank you for the comments all and I am very sorry for such a late reply but had an operation, hopefully back in action soon again.

Embe: I like what you are doing there with the single lines, very confident.

Hamorhage: To be honest, have you seen your own work?! Very smooth, very polished, very nice flow. Looking forward to seeing more.

Nat: Haha! I was always like "just one more layer..." . Will do some longer ones as well. Nice structure on your poses and looks like you're also on a good way of capturing the flow of the gesture, let's see how how it shall progress!
