Spartan Camp #260- 50 gestures + Optional "Hand Gestures Study"

Spartan Camp #260- 50 gestures + Optional "Hand Gestures Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 7th of April.

    - The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

    - In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Hand Gestures Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

    The Background
A simple but effective study this time around! Drawing hands can be very tough, so this week we'll give them a little extra attention.

    The Exercise
To keep this tricky subject simple, we'll use the same method as with figures. Rather than to focus on complex details we draw the basic shapes, form, (e)motion, and movement. We draw some gestures. For this weeks optional study, some of your gestures should be hands. A convenient way to perform this study is to simply draw your own (other) hand. Using a mirror is useful to create more gestures and get a different view. Note that we are gesture drawing, so we are not aiming for elaborate studies. This is also easier to maintain for your posing hand. To give you an idea, this sketchbook post has some good hand gestures. drawings.

    Reference
If you don't feel like using your own hand, here's a few possible reference sources

Link 1: Posemaniacs' hands. Can be rotated.
Link 2: I recently found this guide and have not had the opportunity to go trough the whole thing. It seems tailored towards antropomorphic drawing, but it also has some decent reference for the current optional study under the "hands" section.
Link 3: Medical examinations such as these can provide some quick gesture reference.
Link 3: Random hand photo gallery.

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

So, here's a couple more things!

    - Emoticons are currently not working for me. That includes the familiar stars, unfortunately. I'm sure that's only temporary though.

    - I'm cleaning up the new banner, so it will be added this week. Thanks for your feedback!

    - I can probably get the thumbnail at the top of the CA.org page fixed. I figured it would be a good idea to have a representative image in the banner that would carry over to the thumbnail. Like it does with the other activities. Problem is, I don't really have a suitable image for that. I'm currently digging through the old Spartan Camp rounds to see whether I can find a nice study submitted by someone. Seems fitting. Of course, I'm open for suggestions!

Great work HederaHiberna! I love the shading as well, makes the volume pop out more. Are the poses 60 sec or 90?

life drawing (I think I've gone back to contour drawing )

    So,

    - Gestures from reference (some 30, some 60sec),
    - Hands after my own hand, and then a couple of gestures from imagination.
    - I also added the optional study from last week. Had not finished that one yet.

I need to do less contours and more figures with volume/values. Goal set for next week.

HederaHiberna; Hi and welcome! Doing pretty good! You asked last week whether to draw silhouettes or 'normal' gestures. I'd say they serve a slightly different purpose, so it's good to vary your studies. Either way I wouldn't advice doing gestures only. It's a good basis but there's more to (figure) drawing. Nice job on your posemaniacs this week though! You pretty much got the essence of those poses in there. Mind though that those 3d figures should be taken with a grain of salt. Especially the muscles can look really awkward up close. Also, try a couple of gestures from imagination! Applying the things you've learned really helps. Else you've just learned to.. draw posemaniacs.. right? Either way, those might be personal thoughts. Solid hands too! Thumb can be tough..

    - nat -; Seems you've done your hands with a pen? Pen is always interesting. You can tell that in some of those drawings you 'hit the mark' and the drawing looks good right away. Good practice. I think in some cases you may have neglected the wrist slightly. The joint is pretty noticeable by the 'bulges' on the side and I find those to be good landmarks. I hadn't even thought of posing my hand while holding things, that's a good move. Nice imagination figures! I think you're really on the right track with those legs.

nat - I used the random pose viewer. Average is about 3 minutes each.
Anthis - Thanks for getting back to me, Anthis. That turn around is stunning! Saved for inspirational purposes
I added some figures from imagination.
