Thread: Widdershins's Sketchbook
March 28th, 2013 #1
So, I started a new sketchbook yesterday. These are based either off photo reference or posemaniacs (the hands!) Will specify when I post sketches from live reference.
Planning a trip to our local natural history museum next week, so that should be fun!
Will be trying to update daily

Some poses look nice, others need some work, but keep the practice-machine rolling!
Drawing from life will always be the best practice,

Thanks! From life is infinitely better, there's bit of of a drought with life drawing classes in my area, trying to cobble something together with friends, but I'm trying to compensate by choosing more dynamic poses from photo reference if I don't have any other options. It feels a bit less like cheating if I'm going for poses that models might have a difficult time holding anyway, heh.

So, I got some bus time with my sketchbook. Been a while to be honest, I was pretty disciplined this time last year.
Also Daarken uploaded this video the other day, so I thought it would be really cool exercise. Basic idea is to paint the image in solid colours from photo reference at full opacity first, and to select the colours yourself and not use the eyedropper tool. This is much harder than it sounds, and I cheated once or twice with both of them. I also should have put more effort into the actual structure of the faces, but I was focusing more on the colours, although that's not really an excuse. I'm going to try again tonight, and I'll try to do it better.

Quick sketches off Posemaniacs. Trying to improve my line, it looks messy here, but it was much hairier a few months ago!

Right to left: Study from a a photo (I sampled the colours, just wanted to try out painting her face because of the wrinkles and bone structure)super quick sketch, and kind of a study from a photo, I changed the hair and made her look about 20 or 30 years younger than the reference.

The attachment manager seems to have changed, so I don't think so, this was the largest filesize I could go for! I have a slightly larger version on DA (http://calcination.deviantart.com/ar...lyer-367260444)

Life drawing update! I'm about 8 sessions in, I've only ever managed to attend 3 sessions before (Not because I wouldn't, but because there weren't any I could attend!)
Super apologies for picture quality, but I don't have a camera and I had to borrow my boyfriend's iphone to take these, and didn't have a long time to do it!

WIP Character portrait of sorts. Went into waaaaaay too much detail on the face without structuring it properly first (you will notice the wonkiness) I do this with everything, and it's a bad habit I'm trying to get out of :/
