    Return to concept art.

    Hi all,

First of all thanks for visiting my sketchbook. I was a member of concept art several years ago while I was studying Computer Games Design at the University of Teesside. When I compare my work to those on this site I was a bit overwhelmed by the skill level, and as such became pretty de-motivated. After which I became a youth worker for a few years; I tried to get involved in creative activities where I could but I never truly felt fulfilled in the role.

I have realised my passion all over again and I know now that I need to work hard if I知 going to get a job as an illustrator. I知 a bit nervous about uploading my work but hopefully I will receive plenty of constructive feedback that will contribute to my development as an artist.

I will start by uploading some of my best work while I was at Uni and some of my old sketches that I have lying around. I知 hoping that having this thread will help me to quickly get my motivation back, and encourage me to keep churning out work. I知 finding that I知 struggling most with using colour effectively and creating immersive environments. I know I have a long way to go but we all have to start somewhere...

Here are some of my old pieces; I could do with some advice on where to focus my attention and where I can find good resources. Thanks all...

    Latest project.

Just started working on this tonight; thought I would try working with colours (as I need the practice!) and attempt my first abstract piece. I知 trying to exaggerate the different light sources affecting the skin. I get to a certain point in all my colour pieces but come to a crashing halt when i have to create realistic lighting...

These first two images are in chronological order. Im keeping motivated by working with references from TV shows i enjoy; this being Garak from 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine', Feedback welcome

    Thanks

First of all: very nice work. I'm deeply in love with your animals and streetview sketches! :-)

Then: shame on me, I totally overlooked your entry and your question in my sketchbook.
I'm no expert with colors and many people told me to "watch my values", so I guess my use of color isn't very virtuoso. Although I never tried this technique myself, I would recommend to paint your picture in gray tones first. When you get your values right, you could block in colors with the same value - it isn't so important, what specific color you use as long as the value is correct.
(I personally prefer low opacity to get kind of a luminous effect.)

But hey: you're on a very good way with your work in progress. It just seems a little bit "washed out" at the moment, but with a little more contrast and color it'll look great.
Sorry for the "blabla"... I hope, my strange answer is at least a little bit helpful.

    Keep on!
