Hello! My name is Ally and I am pursuing editorial illustration. My portfolio is mostly traditional, flat, children's book like work. I've been wanting to improve my digital skills (since I work mostly flat, my rendering skills have gotten rusty). I appreciate any advice and critiques. Thanks so much.
It looks basically fine to me...drawing-wise, it's sort of Cubist-looking because you're showing her face from almost a frontal view but you're also showing quite a bit of the side of her head. Her neck also seems a bit stalk-like. You'd do well to find some photo reference for the foreshortening next time.
Otherwise, there's not really that much to critique here--it's a reasonably competent from-your-head rendering of an idealized female head. You might want to try something more ambitious for the next one.
I agree. A few thoughts, to be taken with a grain of salt as faces are the bane of my existence. *Her* right eye points up quite a bit. Your edges are inconsistent in that they seem randomly placed e.g. lips fuzzy, ears sharp, eyes sharp, her right jaw with a solid line. Ideally sharp edges/lost edges should have a rhythm that tends to lead you to the focal point. Also, her hair is rendered very differently than the rest of her. It's a cool effect but seems more of that flatness you were trying to avoid. Hope that helps.
Pushed the contrast, simplified the neck, added the sternocleidomastoid to the neck, did some minor value adjustments to make the value hierarchy make more sense:
