The Royalty Problem - News: Brad got paid from TAD

    LINK TO JOURNAL

I don't normally post outside of the SKETCHBOOKS section but I figure that not everybody on here follows Brad Rigney on deviantart and I wanted to share. I bought this DVD when it went on sale and it was really useful to see Brad's techniques. I learned a lot so its sad to see that this is happening.

It's such a shame. I would really like to know where my money went if not to the artists who created those downloads. It's so Ironic that Jason is cited as being the very guy we're told to prepare for in his Legal contracts video.

Excuse me, but this is something anyone who considers purchasing CA or TAD products needs to know. They shouldn't be afraid of being banned or censored just because it might hurt someone's bottom line, especially if they are cheating the very artists they use to promote this place. If you get banned for bringing up a legitimate concern, why would you want to be a part of this community anymore anyway?

I for one have heard of similar stories, so I believe every word of it. If this thread gets deleted, I'll post the link again myself.

I'll wait to hear both sides before forming an opinion.

But I swear, if censorship rears its ugly head yet again on this site, I'll be out. I've put hundreds of hours and dollars into this site, but that will be it. Let's hope that's not the case.

Oh honestly, I'm not discounting what happened, plenty of friends of mine left this website for a reason.
I'm just saying that posting things here is pointless, we've seen what happens when these sort of situations arise.
    That's all.

Anyway, censoring this on CA won't do diddly squat. In the last half hour nearly a hundred artists have shared this link on Facebook.

If this gets taken down, it should be re-posted over and over again until every last person is banned from this site if that's what it takes.

I would consider getting banned over this an honor.

Maybe this is why he got kicked out of Massive Black, and now TAD- for his unprofessional behavior.

Am I the only one who thinks it's just a little ironic that they've been stealing from the artists who create the tutorials, and at the same time perma-banning people for file-sharing them since that's stealing as well?

EDIT: After seeing all the immature argumentation back and forth and Jason's latest ranty post, I'm out folks. For good. Drama such as this is incredibly distracting, and I no longer wish to par-take in this community when people are tearing into each other so viciously. In looking around for info about the 2009 drama and subsequent incidents (while also seeing how the internet at large views this site), it's clear that this will just happen again. For a site which is supposed to be about community and group improvement as a whole, it's disgusting to see so much hostility on CA that would never be tolerated on other forums. It pains me to leave a place I once felt was a home, but I feel it's a good decision to take my leave before the whole boat sinks.

I will add my 2cents. I was a student at TAD. Part of the first class to go through the program. I went through the "Drawing and Painting/Fine Art" program and I can honestly say that my experience was great. It would be a shame to demonize the entire institution over this matter. Sterling Hundley, Ron Lemen, Jon English, Jon Foster, George Pratt, Francis Vallejo, Marshall Vandruff, ect.. These Teachers are fantastic instructors that blew my mind daily with insightful and practical knowledge of image making. I can truly say this school has made me a better artist. I know that fellow students in the "2D Entertainment" program have mixed reviews and therefore I cannot vouch for their experience.

I am by no means defending the actions that have been taken against Mr. Rigney and it saddens me greatly to know that a school I am affiliated with is involved.

I just thought you guys might like to hear from someone who attended TAD. If anyone has any questions about my experience hit me up.

for those of you going to the workshop, why not just ask those involved about it directly? forum threads and flames can be deleted, but a personal impression on a mass scale might actually force the issue. if you see the person(s) responsible at said events, you owe it to the community to let them know how you feel about what they are doing to it.

Disgusting. I actually had no idea something like this had happened before (probably because I rarely venture beyond art discussion and sketchbook sections of this forum). I have loved it here in CA.org, but now I'm not sure if I want to stay a second longer. I'm on the edge, but if this thread gets censored I'm gone. I'll migrate permanently to cghub.

This is hands down, the most FASCINATING thread on CA.org right now. I will reserve forming an opinion until we hear from JM, it's only fair.

mozchops - If anything JM says on this board can sway you (and it is my understanding that he WILL say anything) then iunno, i guess you aren't the intended audience. I don't mean for that to sound condescending (but I'm sure it does), its just that most of the people getting vocal about this issue have had direct business dealings with JM. I'm just saying, something is up when everybody he's had history with says the same thing.

On the topic of the workshop, I was one of a few people who asked for a refund, since there had been no news about it for months which was very worrying, and though I was doubtful that I'd get the money back, Jason got in touch with me on Facebook, and the refund came through in a couple of days, no trouble at all. So don't panic for anyone who's having second thought about it.

Such a shame, this site has changed my life and inspired my dreams, as well as putting me in touch with wonderful people and surrounding me with the kinds of artists I want to be like. The only positive out if this all happening again is that it's not all been destroyed; the community is still here, but are now in other places. Crimson Daggers, Livestreams, and especially Facebook at the moment, it just shows that no matter what happens to the sites or the platforms we use, the community still looks out for each other and keeps in touch, and I personally find that pretty inspiring and touching. For anyone having trouble finding these places, send me a message and I'll help you find where all the cool kids hang out now.

We don't need 4.0 update to bring CA back to it's former glory, we just need Manley gone.
