    Prosthetic Shark Fin[Fauna]
    Deadline: Sunday, March 10

Over 100 millions sharks are killed each year for shark fin related delicacies. In the future, the death of a shark for its fins is illegal worldwide and an international watchdog agency has been created to monitor and enforce this, and other similar situations. However, shark fin is still poached no matter that the repercussions are extreme and include huge fines and up to 15 years in prison. This being the case, an alternative method of harvesting fin has been bargained for- a shark may be captured, rendered unconscious, fins surgically removed and a prosthetic replacement attached. This of course, it ridiculously expensive even beyond the thousands of dollars that can be earned from the sale of the meat. To offset costs, the fins have also become aquatic information gathering tools for a variety of sectors including environmental research and sea bed geological ventures being but two examples.

You are to pick a funding sector and design the fin that corresponds. Include a graphic showing how the fin integrates into the shark's body.

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw a Prosthetic Shark Fin.
    2. That's it... now draw!

    Great topic!
By funding sector do you mean, maybe the company that would manufacture the fin?

The way this would likely work is that there would be one firm creating the fin itself which would have a sort of "rentable" space which another firm (specializing in whatever area of research) would use to host their research component. This second firm would pay for that space and provide a large amount of the funding for the prosthesis, and in turn lower the price for the fin meat surgery procedure as they are the ones gathering salable material. The prosthesis itself has no value as a consumer item and in reality is produced only to pacify the watchdog agency. Of course, there would likely be anti-fin surgery groups, but at least this way it allows a legal alternative to killing the shark, and allows it to continue to reproduce. That's the idea anyhow...

Edit: Just realized that didn't really answer the question. The funding sector is the research company using the "host" space in this case.

    Finals thread is up.

max: I would suggest making sure that the fin is the highlight of your design- the rest of the shark is to stay organic as much as possible.

Here is my first wip. You forget how badass sharks look until you do a painting of them. Mine is a mako shark, one of the fastest fish in the world. The fins are designed by a shipping / boatbuilding company to learn about the hydrodynamics of this sweet shark.

An Industrial Designer who likes to pretend he can paint.
