CHoW#320 :: Dranok the Pale - Centaur Warlord

    Name: ChowBannerFinal.jpg
Views: 379
Size: 242.5 KB

    Character of the Week #320
Dranok the Pale - Centaur Warlord

    Deadline - Sunday, March 10 10PM GMT

Among the mountain tribes of Everwind there are many Centaur Warlords, each commanding a small but deadly force loyal to that Warlord.
But there is one Warlord who rises above all others, he is called Dranok the Pale. He symbolizes the dark and unruly forces of nature and is both
respected and feared among the other tribe leaders. His pale skin and fur make him appear almost ghost like and he has often been described
as the dead among the living. His armour and battle axe have been passed down for generations both of which bear his tribes markings.

This week we would like you to design the legendary Dranok the Pale, Centaur Warlord.

    The Guidelines:
    • Gender is male
    • His armour and battle axe must show his tribes markings

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread
    • Background is optional
    • Have fun!

Cool topic! Here's a first sketch (grey markers and pencil), sorry for the bad quality, my scanner is broken so I had to take photos.

    lovely topic!

heres my first sketch. i like the left one most, though i dont think he will be getting a beard (too much WoW nightelf style) also i think of centaurs, being close to nature in a balanced or savage way, so there wont be any metal armor for mine (maybe the weapon, if i cant think of something better)

    gl to everyone!

This is completely new territory for me, so it will be a great time to try something out. Just trying to get some anatomy and the pose down. I think I might change the arm to have him pointing more toward the audience...

I have no idea of how to draw horses, so I guess I have half an idea of how to draw centaurs.

Here, let me introduce you to my friend. His name is Internet, and he has 2 pet parrots galled Google and Bing. They are the damnedest most intelligent animals you have ever seen. You can tell them to search for anything you could possibly think of and they will find it!

Lol, all jokes aside, I'm just being a smart ass. :b

But my point is, don't draw what you don't know. Use reference! There are millions of photo references out there on the internet and all you have to do is look through them and find one you like. Then you use your imagination to determine where you feel is a good spot to join the two. Heck you can even find reference photos for armor for the upper body...and....HORSE armor for the horse body. If you need help drawing the human body, well there are even MORE reference photos for that! So fire up those search engines and start looking!

How loose can we be with our interpretation of a centaur?
    Edit: To reiterate;
    1. Does it have to be a horse, or can it be any 4 legged hoofed mammal (deer, stag, donkey, giraffe, etc)?
    2. Does the body arrangement have to be so the man's torso sticks out of the "horse"'s neck, or can it be shifted about, while still maintaining the whole "man on top, beast on the bottom" dynamic?

Eph Good question, please stick with the traditional centaur, half man, half horse, torso coming out of neck.

    Hope that helps.

Need to fix raised arm and maybe angle of axe.
I kinda like how it is already don't think i'll put too much armour on, maybe some dangly things.
Needs to look more warlordy, rather than warrior

Still figuring out the axe. I was thinking I would make his tribe sigil be the second head on it. I also think I might need to open up the composition on the left?

so i did some quick variations to organize my thoughts:

1: focus on nature, animalistic skulls bark/leaf armor and a trustworthy/heroic/half savage personality

2: the chaotic armored (yes i added armor as a tryout) warlord type, this one focusus on being a badass warrior i guess

3: a more sinister approach, i think pale skin would fit this one allt o well, tho he doesnt have a real Warlord thing going for him

4: mountain/desert dweller/tribesman, focus on warpaint and a nomad life aswell as leading his tribe

for now i like 3 and 4 best, 3 would be the fun way to go, but im not sure ill fit the theme with that one. i guess 4 would be the safe route... and, well.. thats not the best approach either

    C&C always welcome!

    Some cool ideas!
I might play if I get chance as for now a quick rough.
Still playing with the axe and the feel of Dranok - he's a little too civilised and not dead enough yet…

Those awful feels you get when you look at your work, then look at other peoples work. Might be embarrassing myself with the sketch but I might aswell try =] Also, Venger, holy crap on a stick that looks great!

Going for a naked warrior type of thing.

When I heard pale, and horse, I immediately thought of the "pale horseman". So just trying to mash up that with a centaur-warlord.
The sign is on the left, it's supposed to be the sign for Sagittarius mixed in with the character's ax, but it looks weird right now and I don't like it.
