Maybe find out what is their favorite movie or game. Find "The Art of X" of their favorite game or movie as a gift.

I think if you buy a stack of blank sketchbooks for an artist friend. I think they will appreciate it.

Make a sketchbook happy, feed it a tip to improve!

Alcohol. Or Coffee. Really strong coffee.

Otherwise I'd go for a nice art book by one of their fav artists or something like that.

The two new Blizz art books are out.

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment and The Cinematic Art of World of Warcraft: WotLK

Even if they don't like the game you can't deny that their art is first class.

Also, you can't go wrong with a Moleskine sketchbook

Might run you a little more than fifty, though.

Artists are great people to get gifts for. Always something they need or could use somehow. References, materials, learning resources, art books...
The same goes for pretty much everyone who really "does" something with their professional life/their spare time. Unfortunately most people have nothing like that in their lives. Finding the right gift for someone who isn't passionate about anything is a nightmare.

I didn't think it was possible to be called an artist when you have nothing to say. It's like being a writer who publishes individual words as books and expects to be praised for it.

External hard drives/flash drives. You can never have enough hard drives to backup files.
