sean mclain - cool start man, looks very dynamic and has loads of action. Although only a quick thumb it's tough to see the 'ambushed' aspect yet though. I'm looking forward to seeing you push your ideas further!

did a few thumbs, ended with these two. Some thoughts on which you guys prefer would be prity awesome, i can't make my mind up :p

A little dark but I think I like this option better... it's the portion of the ambush where they spring out... Surprise! Death and carnage!

Sean McClain – I like it. It seems fine to me, the illustration of an awaiting army, preparing to ambush an opposing force when they come into range. I think the composition is a little off balance though, with everything pointing off the left hand side but not being able to see what is going on.

Warburton – cool thumbs, my favourite is the right. It reminds me of the Witcher 2, maybe you could push the verticality?

MasterTroglodyte – I really like your sketches, always impressive. I actually prefer the first one, but you’re probably right that the second is better. I just like the idea of lying on a branch and rolling off to assassinate the target.

MasterTroglodyte - I really like your first sketch because of the interesting composition and tilted viewing angle. The guy on the background makes the picture confusing but if you'd change that into someone coming downhill on a forest path for example (I'm see the guy on the foreground as leaning against a tree), it could make a good illustration with the sense of expectancy you've already nailed on the front guy. The latter composition looks kind of static with the hero in the center and a the moment, there's nothing to tell why it's an ambush.

Warburton - I really like the clarity, poses and lighting on your first sketch but both of them have a nice sense of tension.

Sean - Nice sketch, I love the way you suggest a huge army with simple strokes. I agree with Warburton about the obscurity of the ambush though.

MasterTroglodyte - i like the second one too, it has alot more action and has great potential.

dayle - thanks man, i appreciate the feedback.

smuli - cool start, i like what you've done with the colours, i had thinking something similar in mind for my forest version :p As a possible crit i would try and close up the composition abit to try and build abit more tension as it looks abit open. It almost feels like their playing a game of hide and seek rather than an ambush at the mo. Perhaps try putting some foliage in the trees and adding more terrian, like the guys just riden into an area where hes completely vunerable and surrounded.

update, i'm still not sure :p

Warburton - Thanks a lot for the advice! The character details brought a lot of life in your forest scene, the archer especially looks great, though I had to press my nose to the screen to see the lines. Sounds good about the colors. What bothers me in the picture though is that with just they're heads shown, I don't know what the soldiers are doing there and they're expressions look like they're wondering the same thing. Are their weapons drawn, are they searching or just passing through? Extending the picture towards the ground could help shed some light to it and showing the horizon line could make the perspective easier to figure out.

I tried a different composition because the other one focuses more on the environment than the action itself.

I decided to go with this one since the colors are better.

I didn't think I'd have a chance to do anything with this. I'd finished the pen and ink but wasn't sure I'd be able to do anything with it since my
computer is being terrible. But my new computer arrived and I was able to get more done than I thought.
Any thoughts or critiques would help.
Not wildly happy with it at the moment...

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the
mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all
science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who
can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe,
is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.
