    Can I get some advice on my first commissioned portrait?

    I recently recieved an e-mail from a guy out of California- said he thought my work was fantastic, and would like to know roughly how much a 24"x24" portrait would be.

    I've never up to this point even thought about this kind of thing, just been studying...I'm not sure what general rates are, how I should handle this discussion, or what. Though I am kind of in need of money, so I would like to get this right the first time.

    I'm wondering if I should ask for like half up front and the rest after completion? I don't want to do a bunch of work for nothing so yeah

    Any advice?

    Thanks a bunch guys

    Estimate the number of hours you'll need, multiply by the hourly wage you want to get, multiply by two.

    What aremhaus said.
    And;
    Definitely ask for half up front and the balance on delivery. I've painted smething like 50 to 70 commissioned portraits form children's heads to full blown group portriats of 8 people, and it is absolutely standad to ask for half the money up front.
    If the guy is serious he'll agree. The first stage will be a series of email/phone exchanges that establish both your legitimacy to each other. Once that is established you'll receive a cheque and things can begin.
