    Grav's Sketchbook

Hi everyone. I'm 28 and I wanted to draw for a long time. But always thought it would be impossible. Well, I finally decided to do it about 2 months ago. Let's see how it turns out.

Currently I'm doing some simple line and ellipse practices, gestures, anatomy and few other things.

Hey. I started at 28 too (never really drew before then, that was nearly three years ago now). Must be an early mid-life crisis thing. Anyway, keep going, it's frustrating as hell getting your ass handed to you by 12 year olds for many years to come, but stick with it. Worst case scenario, we'll be rockin' artists when we hit retirement age

Only suggestion I've got is learn perspective ASAP. Most people put it off way too long (me included). Perspective for artists and architects by Gwen White is the best book I've found on the subject.

I'm adding some more practices, digital today. I try to mix traditional and digital every other day. Same with freehand and using lines.

    @Kvetch
I have seen your sketchbook. Great stuff. I also started working on perspective. Was reading "perspective made easy" recently. After that i will check book you recommended.

Yey, seems my sketchbook has been approved, so I'm adding few more. I practiced blending a little, and made a color wheel. Also some quick head study. Tell me if the size of images is too big, so i will make them smaller next time.

Adding more studies. Tried drawing some ears and noses. Kinda struggling with perspective and VP's being outside paper. Need to practice more with spheres and read about constructing perfect cubes without eyeballing. It's kinda overwhelming how many things there are to learn.

Did 2 more portraits today, some separate small shading study and another apple. I hope I'm going in right direction. Need more life studies and pretty much more of everything.

Today I decided to practice some hands. Seems really hard to draw. Will need to do much more of those. Also did something for fun, can't have only studies.

Haven't posted in a while. I wonder if anyone even visits this. Anyway i did various things in that time. Gonna post some of them. Played more with manga style and some colors. Also always reading and watching everything that can help me get better. I wonder if i ever get faster at drawing those things.

    Hey,

Hands are completely impossible to draw. The still lifes are good. I'd spend some time reading up on ellipses work in perspective. There are a few simple rules that make drawing anything cylindrical a hell of a lot easier.

    Keep the updates coming

Did some more hands, learned a bit about anime hair and tried to do some OC. Damn, it took so long. Also working on another apple, but texture is giving me trouble. Will post it tomorrow.

Did one portrait today (used a photo from lovecastle.org). It took long time with my skills. Plus some 45s gestures. Also started working on some other things and still fighting that stupid apple. Will post it tomorrow.

Hi mate, the thing with the apple is that (in the previous versions at least) you aren't using value to describe the form - there needs to be a definite light direction, and because the surface curves constantly, a continuous change in value (lightness/darkness). If you can paint the apple white or wrap it in tissue paper or something you'll clearly be able to see how the value changes depending on where the light comes from.
The idea is that you need to think about which parts of the apple the light can hit, and which parts it cant, and always use an appropriate value.

    I like this explanation: http://stapletonkearns.blogspot.co.u...dbug-line.html

Anyway, good updates. Keep them coming!

Hey, thanks for feedback. I read that article. So I tried make shadow side a bit darker, but it almost can't be seen in real life. That side is illuminated by monitor. It reflects a lot too. Should I place it in some other place next time?

I also have problem with making apple texture, it just seems impossible with so many details. Are there any techniques for this, or do i need to use some custom textures and brushes?

And blending ends as a mess. And a desk, and highlights, shadow. Damn...
