    Ruin Porn (large files)

I'm from suburban Detroit, I moved into the city a few years ago to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Before finishing up the degree I have had the opportunity to explore and learn about the city.

I had the opportunity to visit the abandoned Packard Plant recently and I took some crappy pictures with my old Droid X, despite the low quality I think some of these pics are pretty interesting and figured you guys would like to see them. I certainly felt the visit was one of the creepiest, most depressing and yet oddly awe inspiring things I've ever done. This plant is one of, if not the single largest abandoned site anywhere in the world with something like 3 to 3.5 million square feet. I could keep talking about the plant, but I there are better sources of info about it like this video.

I love my home town, and I have to believe it can come back, and while it is certainly true that several large areas of the city are experiencing major recovery, I also need to recognize that things will likely get much worse before they get better in any meaningful way. The majority of the populace is poor, uneducated, angry and constantly manipulated by the city's shockingly corrupt political leaders. Because of this the city will almost certainly go bankrupt in the near future, leading to a state take over of city management and possibly a race riot.

Despite this, now that I have my degree I'm looking for a place downtown and intend to stay and see how this whole mess sorts out.

Some of these look like scenes from a crazy post-apocalyptic movie. Thanks for posting.

I was expecting either really bad porn that can never be unseen or porn spoilers. Can't ruin those plots now.

I was wondering about that myself. There are large scale operations going through the complex building by building, but I think for the average scrapper, the steel rebar just isn't worth the danger.

Feel free to use any of these pics for reference. If you do any drawings based on these I'd appreciate it if you posted them in here.

Thanks for all the kind replys. I went through my picture folder thinking I had some awesome pics of an abandoned power plant, unfortunately those pics seem to have disappeared. I do have some pictures my brother took at the abandoned Belle Isle Zoo. These pics are kind of hard for me to look at because I used to go to this place as a kid with my grandma when it was still open. It closed due to financial difficulties in 2003 and has been crumbling ever since. The thing that makes this so god damn depressing is that Belle Isle was laid out by the same guy who designed Central Park in New York and it used to rival Central Park in beauty. Its in pretty rough shape now, but there is still some good stuff to see there.

Well, I figure I should include at least one picture that doesn't depress me here. This is the Belle Isle Lighthouse, I took this back in July.

Ain't that the truth. I remember back when I was a kid, and myself and a friend made a deal with a guy who lived across from an old abandoned school: We went in and ripped out all the radiators (those big assed oldschool ones), along with much of the old copper pipework too, which was thicker than what is generally used now and had a slightly bigger diameter. A full days work gave us £50 a piece. Looking back, we got ripped off big style, but for a ten year old kid, that kind of money (circa '85) was the big time, haha.

I remeber buying a whole box of Panini stickers, but I'm not sure what the rest of the money went on. I guess if I was a few years older at the time, and in secondary school; I could have paid for my sex education with some of the older girls. Back then, all you had to be was a kid with cigarettes!

Hey, don't look at me like that. I've never paid for sex. I'm just saying... -_-
