Need feedback on a creative assignment design for an art school application

The creative assignment for the art school I'm applying to is:

Graphic Design: Design a postage stamp depicting your favorite fruit or vegetable. Submit an 8" x 8" solution.

    This is my first attempt.
I'm hoping to get any kind of feedback on what to add/change because I'm completely stuck..
I wish I could do more than 1 kind of fruit or something

one point i would like to mention that i was totally confused at first that what you have drawn until i saw the name on the poster that you have designed an Orange but to be very honest it does not look like an orange so firstly give it a proper shape of an orange otherwise the color combination is pretty simple that is good. Good Luck

That orange should be more orange . I think you'd have a better chance of communicating orange if you present it cut in half (like http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nrw47tPGg_...tamin-c-lg.jpg ).
Don't add texture all over the place in the same way, if you're having texture in the orange make it more subtle in the back.
Don't forget to make it look tasty. Good luck!

I agree with Januz that you should use an orange that has been cut in half. Remember that design is all about communication which is then linked to simplicity/clarity, so always try and find the most iconic elements of an object and remove all elements that are not needed to communicate the idea.

I'd maybe also suggest getting a better font as the current one doesn't really say "orange" or "stamp" to me, it's just a bit too cartoony.
(For free fonts I'd recommend http://www.fontsquirrel.com/ and http://www.losttype.com/)

I like it. Has some type of "old-timey South American" feel to it (for me at least).
