CHOW #315 :: The Royal Family

    Name: ChowBannerFinal.jpg
Views: 1314
Size: 118.1 KB

    Character of the Week #315
    The Royal Family
    Deadline - Sunday, February 3 10PM GMT

Playing cards are one of the oldest forms of entertainment. What people don't know is that they symbolize actual people in another world. There are 4 factions, each represented by the symbols (Heart, Diamond, Club, Spade) and each member wears this symbol. Each faction is ruled by a king, queen, and jack (prince)

We want you to pick one of the three face cards and design them within the world they live in.

    The Guidelines:
    • Must be humanoid.
    • May be of the core races such as, elf, human, orc, dwarf, gnome, halfling, etc. As long as we are familiar with the race.
    • Gender MUST reflect the same as the card. (Queens are female, kings and jacks are male)
    • Character MUST have the faction symbol depicted on them.Stick with the color scheme of the cards; red or black

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
    • At least two wips posted in the finals thread
    • Background is optional
    • Have fun!

Zombies and ghosts, no; those are more like a state of being. The problem with the Devil race is that they are more "beastly" and can be interpreted in many different ways. What we want to see is something that we are all familiar with, so I would suggest avoiding abyssal races. If you want, look up all the Dungeons and Dragons CORE playable races. They have a good variety throughout the different versions.

@ all the new comers: Welcome! I just want to let all of you know, who have not participated in the CHoW before, to PLEASE read the rules at the top of the page and follow the brief! Post your WIPs in this thread for critiques. Quinn and I will do our best to keep everyone on track and offer feedback. If you have any questions, please ask through the thread or PM.

Good luck to everyone this week!

Well since everyone is showing their rough roughs might as well join.
I chose the Jack of Diamonds.

I'm still figuring out where I even want to go with it. But basically when I picture royalty I can't picture them being good. Power corrupts. So a psychotic little prince came to mind first.

Not sure what he's doing yet, looking at something bloody. Was originally going to be at a dissection table but there's the 3/4ths character rule so had to cancel that idea. Maybe let the shadow give the idea Like an executioners axe/table or something and make the canvas a little larger but dunno yet, still rough. Pose still bugs me to all hell been reworking that plenty, chair might be making it worse, gotta adjust that. .

Edit: I like to keep track of my stuff in one post unless it's a big jump, so just tacking it on to this one.
I have what I want it to be, but I don't know if I can convey the feeling of an execution or something in a shadow, or even get the perspective of the shadow right =/

Still rough and fixing as I go, trying to figure things out, especially with value, I don't want to go overboard like I did last time and get a big mush of mud.

As long as Black or Red is a main color focus, you may have other color in it as well. I think Pixel demonstrates this very well.

For Havok Reed :Thanks for your explain !!
Then I will choose the half-elf race to be my character design xD

This is Prince of clubs, because clubs is the last one of the 4 factions, so I try to making him a little spoiled lol
My friend tell me that the half-elf's ear should be more small, not like this.
I think I will fix it later xD

That owl is adorable!!! Yes, a half elf is half human, half elf. So the ears aren't as prominent as you have them. But if you want to just stick with full elf, then that's fine too and you don't have to change anything

Also, just a reminder to everyone, the "faction" symbol must be depicted with the design! I know it's still early stages, so there is much designing to be had.

    Very cool topic.

Did a little research, and turns out playing cards have all sorts of symbolism attached to them:
    ( Click to show/hide )
-French playing cards have historic/mythical figures attached to them.
    Kings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_%28playing_card%29
    Spades: King David.
    Hearts: Charlemagne.
    Diamonds: Julius Caesar.
    Clubs: Alexander the Great.
    Queens: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_%28playing_card%29
    Spades: Athena.
    Hearts: Judith.
    Diamonds: Rachel.
    Clubs: Argine.
    Jacks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_%28playing_card%29
    Spades: Ogier the Dane.
    Hearts: La Hire.
    Diamonds: Hector of Troy.
    Clubs: Lancelot.
-Each suit has a corresponding suit in a tarot-deck (Spades= Swords, Hearts= Cups, Diamonds= Coins, and Clubs= Wands), and then also has elements, class, and other things attached to those suits: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_Arcana

Went with the idea that people in history and fiction were being plucked out of their worlds, and brought into this one to take on the persona of their suit and role. Decided on the Jack of Clubs, and did some quick designs for the clubs-insignia and the character.
