Have been lurking for a while, finally decided to get drawing a bit more seriously, so thought I might as well start a SB.
A quick background: I've been drawing on and off for the past 4 years (more off than on), no real education other than workshops by the amazing Tom van de Wouwer (http://www.tomvandewouwer.com/home.html).
I study dutch/english at school so nothing to do with art. I also make scenery and terrain for warhammer on my DA --> http://wannagotoheaven.deviantart.com/
I have absolutely no idea where I'm going with my art, I'm just trying to get a sense of realism in my pieces, aiming for likeness and the right proportions. I'm also fascinated with Scott Robertson's work, and am working to get my free hand sketching up a notch.
Here's a sample of free hand practice exercises/ hands / portraits and some ships ala Robertson.
Feel free to drop in and crit/encourage me. ANything is appreciated

Very cool stuff, dude ! I see some really nice mechas, i see the similarity with the style of Scott Robertson. I would advice you to finish your face drawings.. do not leave them unfinished, though Leonardo said "Art is never finished, only abandoned. " you may try to make your pieces look more complete. Your hand studies are also very good looking and this reminds me that i should do more hands, lol.
Thanks Ivan, I'm just trying to get the likeness atm, might try something more soon
More studies and free hand practice. Hands are from life btw
Hey, really nice portraits and hand studies! Glad that you are practicing freehand lines and ellipses, it's a must keep it up buddy!
Did a 1 hour class thing on pixellovely, quite fun will try and fit one in daily as much as I can.
First time digital and poses since forever
Nice start! In addition to what you are already doing, it might be helpful to add some time to practice using charcoal to first block in light and dark areas so you get a better sense of volumes and shapes before starting to refine features.
Thanks Aqua, I'll try and find the time for that!
Again same routine, free hand/hands/faces/poses; hands from life/ref faces and poses from ref. Also I got stuck in a hospital and found a drawing they call Mandalas, and went for a shading exercice
Same old same old. The two bigger portraits are from life, gf posed for me
Good start. Keep posting!
Thanks both of you. Major pc problems, mine crashed and had to find funds to get a new one...
Here's an old portrait and a recent study of a Gericault painting
nice man. this blue portrait is quite good I think. Lets draw even more!
LET'S DRIVE DOWN MEMORY LANE!
Lots of old stuff from 4yrs ago-1 yr ago
Enjoying my last moments before my trip. Some studies online "life drawing", portraits and perspective
Not as much drawing because I'm discovering new york, but I still manage to draw daily which is cool.
I have a hard time settling down to do personal work tho, really have to make a switch and get started soon
Started a 100 portrait challenge last wednesday. Decided to do 50 digi /50 trad, made it to 80ish because trying to get used to digi is really hard for me. I'll finish it up and will do the Suzanne Helmigh mentor program
nice shading keep going :-)
Taking a break from portraits by doing so,e Robertson thumbnail studies
Hey you're making some good progress! I'd look out for placement of facial features and such in your portraits, there are some good books on head construction. Andrew Loomis' head and hands is particularly helpful. Other than that you seem to have a good eye for value and some keen observational skills. Keep the ball rolling
Thanks joeS, I really have to try to construct the face better as you said. Gonna start actual studies of the head now
Finally finished the 50 digital portraits. Getting there bit by bit, gonna start doing actualy head studies
Did my first portrait from imagination ever, could use some help, here what I think is wrong with it:
the head shape feels like it doesn't belong with the features somehow, maybe it's too broad?
The mouth kinda looks flat
I'm not sure about the shadows, looked at some faces to get an idea of what to do
I tried not pushing the whites/blacks but you can't really see the 6 dark accents.
Also some nose studies. Finding good ref is impossibly hard :l
Recent sketches, trying to get some stuff from mind on paper daily now, something I've never done
Quite busy last couple days, but here's some more box figures
Thanks andrewg2442 let's hope I will keep up
Went to the Metropolitan today and did some portrait drawings, blocking in the shadow and rendering a bit here and there
Recent stuff, some more box figures and some spacemarine studies. Hopefully I'll get some marines from imagination soon.
Great progress! Keep up the hard work!!
I'm a peacock, you gotta let me fly!
