Hi. Nice updates... any chance you could keep going with the tiny black and white statue? (top right) The lighting looks really interesting on her. Why are they so little?! I think you could post bigger without losing any of the energy. Thanks for the comments and support. Take care and speak soon. \o/

Hi! Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook and for the kind words.
Your dedication is impressive and progress is showing up. I especially love the statue study in post #159. Gorgeous colors and atmosphere.

If I may risk a remark, it is this one: in much of your studies of standing people, they seem to float around in an empty space. You might try and place them on a ground and paint a cast shadow. It would really help to define the forms better and enhance immensely your compositions.
A good exercise would be to draw simple forms, like cubes, cylinders, cones, deciding of a single light source, shadowing the different planes accordingly and projecting the shadow on the surroundings. It really helps acquiring the sense of solidity and presence. You could even try and do that traditionally, using different sort of hatchings, for ewample. I would also suggest doing somme perspective exercises from time to time.
Two fantastic books: Color and Light, by James Gurney, and Light for Visual Artists, by Richard Yot.

Again, what I see here is progress: better anatomy and proportions, more confident brush strokes, some really nice colors, interesting sketches.... Keep it up!

Alex! Thank you so much for the sweet words and for the critique. You are totally right about the dynamism, I struggle with that. .... I need to work harder. So much to learn! Thanks for the feedback means a lot to me and about the books I would check out.

Some 2-3 min gesture studies and 5 min color studies

Hi Nika. Cool updates! Shame about the shark alien, I gave up on mine too. Good to see you doing a character design, I like the thumbnails and the shark head is looking good. I'd really like to see one of those thumbnail colour studies worked up into a full size picture, I think it would be good for you to push yourself, especially now you are getting good with values and lighting. I hope you do more characters / imagination stuff. Speak soon.

When you do colour studies, try to do master studies instead of photo studies -- photos don't pick up on the same range of colours as the human eye can, so master studies are better. Painters like Vermeer, John Singer Sargent, etc.

Good work, keep it up! Hope to hear from you soon.

Dumbravita, thanks for the suggestion and tips! Yeah, I should pay more attention to color, but for now I read alot of color tutorials from Linda Bergkvist, they are the best. Thank you!

My new resolution for this year is to learn more and evolve in this field, I wish everyone the best! Cheers

Hi! Thanks for your kind words, they are much appreciated.

Your dedication is inspiring - I feel lazy when I check your updates. I'd like to see a more refined work from you though, made without any time limit and in wich you'd try to go as far as possible - be it a copy or an original piece. Working on the same pic over a long period of time is a genuilely interesting experience, and you'd be surprised by the way all your previous studies would fit together.

You might also be interested by the Composition 1.1 Workshop. Pure gold knowledge in there.

    Happy learning!

Very interesting stuff here Your characters are rapidly improving! My only advice would be to keep studying. Gestures, paint stuff from life (doesn´t have to be an apple, just pick something really interesting), You´re definitely headed in the right direction!
Tips on staying focused? Print out some of your favorite artists work and hang it up in your room, look at it, and study it. Make notes on post its and hang them next to it. Just make sure to change them every couple of days. Never get too hung up with a certain way of doing things.

Keep at it! You´re doing great
