    Smile Benny's Sketchbook

    Hi peeps.

Had a good look around and I'm in awe at the raw talent and learned talent here. Amazing.

I don't have many recent sketches because I tend to obliterate them when I work them into final pieces. I also work on a WACOM and don't have a scanner, so my stuff will predominantly be digital in nature. I do have some oldish pen and pencil sketches that I'll stick on here.

I will start sketching some work purely for this thread I promise. I have a lot to learn when it comes to landscapes and figure work so I shall be posting some of that methinks.

I'm not a great fan of my sketches by the way... they have remained tucked away never to be seen but a dear friend has convinced me to show them and pointed me to this site.

Please please feel free to critique and whatnot.

    pencil and digital

    Pencil

    pencil

Digital... I am actually still working on this one.. it's a 'to do'!

I'm not sure whether I'll finish this one... it started out as a pencil line drawing.

These two are for a film that hasn't been released yet. I do know these were rejected... so it's ok for me to post them.

This is a recent tattoo I designed...

Anyway... I hope I've uploaded them in the right format. I'll get some new stuff up here soon hopefully. Thanks for viewing. Ben

Hi Lionheart.... Yes.. that's actually my intention. I haven't done studies for years and this place is an extremely good excuse to do so.

Here's the finished demon tattoo design that I did. I intend on adding to this image at some point. The guy who commissioned it wanted to see it against a flesh coloured background. Bare in mind it's a tattoo design and that the missing left shoulder and weird positioning is because it was a shape designed to fit between existing ink.

Hey Benny! cool SB! You got some nice ideas going on. I think you overuse the softbrush a bit. The skin of the devil for example is kind of dull. The teeth on the onther hand look nicer. Maybe you could think about how to make the mouth and the eye are appear to be more wet. The lower end of the grasp of the gun looks a bit awkward because the perspective seems to be off. I agree with Lionheart about the studies, I think they would help you a lot particulary with that softbrush thing. Keep it up!

    Hey Matthias... Thanks!

I wanted to put the skin texture on the devil but time was running out for the amount of money he was paying. I agree though, I used soft airbrush tricks to please the client. Also, the gun is far too contrasty and I'm not that happy with it.

I recently did some quick character paintings from little thumbnail pencil sketches I made. The quality of the sketches isn't very good because they were taken on my crap camera phone.

I called this one "Mummy... Clyde's crying again"

I would like to ask... How the hell do I do attachments? I am just photobucketing these images but they are all coming out very standard size and very... linear. I have tried uploading from my computer but it's seemingly not working. The little attach image box comes up.. I upload a picture and then when I click off it it just disappears into the ether. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your words on my sketchbook! I like your pencil line art one, hope you do finish it sometimes. The masked jungle warrior's back seems a bit weird, the skin and muscle definition doesn't seem to twist right to his slicing motion, I know it's a work in progress and you may have caught that, thought I'd just give a small critique from what I see.

As for attachments, you upload it into the box. Once you do that, you have to click insert inline with all the selected images. It'll give them attachment codes which you can lay down as BBcodes. Sometimes files will be really large, so you will have to re-size them before you upload it into the box and click insert inline. I hope this helps.

Nice one.. thanks. Wow... complicated slightly.

I should finish that one. The character isn't actually human and the 'mask' is more like antlers or bone structure and I was going for a different looking musculature. But you are right. I reworked that area too much I think.

Armed with knowledge on how to post an arrangement of panels thanks to Muse Kiko... Here are are a selection of images depicting a character called Bedeekin. With exception to the NASA rover all the bodies of Bedeekin are painted and the head is a silicone rubber model I made years ago.

Didn't go as I expected but what the hell.

I promise I will start some actual sketching... but I've noticed that other peeps are uploading old stuff also.

Working away on a new character. Some sort of renegade faery who uses insect carapaces as armour. I've called him brave Belwin. I've started tidying up the lines on the dragonfly head and the Great Diving Beetle chest guard.

    Thanks Joe..

I've lost the sketch layer and started concentrating on some colour and tighter lines.

Here are some sketches for my novel/film/graphic novel. This is Firmire... the Goggodin, High melderin.. sat within his Kai. Pencil and watercolour pencil

This one is pencil and black Biro. The shadow is off... but overall I am happy with the rest.

Here the Memphrey rears his ugly horned head... again.. .biro and pencil.

I think this is Gauche and watercolour.

An early sketch of Yabba Kaah... or Na'Bukai. Na'Bukai means "born without Kai"

Here is my first ever digital painting of Yabba Kaah. It's actually a digital manipulation of a Gauche painting.

Here is a Young Na'Bukai. digital

This is still on the subject of my story/film/graphic novel... everything... haha

The Methin Moon by the Eye of Mujenjha. Digital

    a

This is the Methin Moon with a small Gethegian Caravan... I originally wanted to fill the frame with a bustle of balloons and more vehicles. It would however have lost the vista me thinks... Gauche and digital.

Close up of the Gethegian Gaddergante.. digital

This is the Swamp of Salimia... home of the Memphrey... the guy with the horny mask-like thing. digital
