    Crisi Miki Wiki's Piki's

Hello! I have been following and admiring the community and artwork on this site for years. A recent paradigm shift in my mind made me re-evaluate what I want to be doing with my life, so I dropped out of my Visual Effects work for Film and Tv which I had been doing in the UK for 10 years or so and moved to Spain! Why Spain you say? There is no money in Spain! No, there isn't, but there is a great sense of community and pride in the arts, and that's what I need to be surrounding myself with right now. It has allowed me to focus more on my own art, and given me a huge sense of freedom. I have many things to upload from the years, but I shall start with my most recent things.

I came back to the UK for Christmas, and about 3 weeks ago now I decided 'Right...lets GO'. I have been drawing all day every day ever since. It's become an avalanche I just can't stop. This is the first time in my entire life I have taken my work so seriously, and been having some real pride in myself for 'getting to it' after 27 years of mostly procrastination.

Right, blurb over, here's some pics.

If you are on Facebook and would like to follow me as Crisi Miki Wiki Piki, I am selling artwork there and available for contact and commissions etc.

    Thank you.

    cmw

First off, here's a load of the pencil pictures I started off with. I am trying to focus on forms rather than details at the moment. I have always got carried away with details, but by limiting myself to about an hour a piece, i've forced myself to 'move on' with a picture.

and the past week or so i've been doing some work with fineliners. I love the boldness of the look, and you have to be more 'brutal' with your decisions.

I'm currently working my way through a few commissions before i head back to Spain, so I have some living money, but after that I shall focus more on some sketchbook studies and will be uploading here.

This is a current project for a client, i'm drawing and painting onto a large sheet of 10mm plywood, its about 23x48 inches at the moment, but may be cut down a bit smaller. The composition is likely to change, i'm just starting with something familiar then i'll get funky.

Thumbnail sketch mock-up and current WIP.

Jaja! Claro. Mi español es mal. Entiendo y aprender poco a poco.

You have a good point about the front shot, I guess i've always known it but never really realised it. It's what i'm most comfortable with, but i'm more than prepared to push it a bit. I've really loosened up recently for the first time ever, and am prepared to try new things!

Nice work! Great pencil and pen drawings, I like how you give the faces structure, not just lines. One advice I can give you on hatching shadows is to follow the direction of the skin. The hatching seems to be mostly done vertically, try using different directions to give more variation in the drawing. You use it for sure, but I think you can exaggerate it more. Hope that makes sense and is any good to you

Thanks overtoom, that's some more solid advice! It's great to have other people see things in your work you weren't so aware of.

Great work! You are very good at capturing the likeness of the individual.

    Hulkfish - thanks mate!

zal - thanks for the kind words! I was in a variety of things over the years from art department artist to props to scenery but my main focus was making models using traditional skills. Mainly Miniatures and 'Bigatures, but sometimes sculptures and other prop related/model work.

Although most of my artwork dominates a 'character' theme, i do from time to time venture beyond these boundaries. I'm by no means an environments artist but I like to have a go sometimes.

The first two are some quick photoshop pieces, and the last colourful one may or may not have been started in marker pens under the influence of some rather interesting fungi. Either way it was then completed in photoshop.

A little WIP of a commission i'm trying to get out the door! I'm used to drawing monsters, ugly people, and old people...or ugly old monsters. So when I was asked to draw two complete beauties I was a little out of my comfort zone. Especially as i'm using fineliners. The heads are about 3 inches long, so when it comes to doing details for eyes etc, any little mistake with my pen could throw the likeness right off. I've relatively new to pen work like this, so am learning a lot from my own practise as well as adapting some techniques i have seen elsewhere.

Great stuff! Love the expressiveness of your style, which is particularly noticeable in your colored work. Also, what's it like working under the influence of 'some rather interesting fungi'? :p Leads to some very colorful results.

Henry - thank you my friend! Kind of you to say.

As for the fungi, interesting. That piece was done new years eve 2009/2010. It's called Pretty Shitty City. It was this whole idea in my head of a city surrounded by such beautiful potential and talent but was festering in it's own greed, corruption and pollution.

I love the way you draw faces! Even though they are quite stylized they look very solid and "convincing". Those enviros are good too (better than mine, at least ), but they lack that solid feel.

Hi mate, and thank you for coming to my den. By the way... What the F..K... You are something awesome. Never saw a style like yours. I definetly love the painting with the tiger head on page 1. And your figure drawings... WOW... no words... A little trait here and there... BANG! You gave the emotion through lines. Praise to you. Keep on posting because I wanna get inspired even more.

LOZ-Thanks man! I'm really glad you like I worry sometimes my 'faces' are a bit samey, but they kinda evolve over time as well. I hope to get better at environments also, I haven't had so much experience there. This website is surely a great place to be. You have some fantastic work in your sketchbook

Luca - hahaha, what a lovely message! Thank you friend, I love your work, it's nice to have mutual respect. There will be lots of updates. I'm pretty focused at the moment so hopefully that will continue.
