Angry LoL FanArt - Need help

So, this is my first digital painting i've done in nearly a year (excluding random tests), and I'm in need of critique. The whole piece just feels kind of dull. Also, need tips on overall values and composition.

Right now I can't tell if you wanted the character to be the focus, or the environment. I can't help but feel this would be a lot more interesting with a worm's eye view camera at the characters feet, with canvas taller than wide, and only a subtler indication of the rest of the terrain in the bottom corner - assuming the character is the focus of course.

To me the eyes lead me towards that whirlwind and that sun like thing but it blends with the rest of the background. I would make that spot really bright. I don't understand the story behind this.

Cool design! Really like the colors.

I made some paint overs in front of my students today and explained how to improve composition and colors, and your painting was one of the examples. Hope that was ok for you!

However, I made a quick paint over and here it is. Im not a pro, so just take it as my opinion.

In the painting i changed the light from right to left because the human brain likes to follow from left to right when they look at a story, and also I didn't think the character was lit in the right way. I Also wanted the bird to be more involved in the story so I put it in front of the light source to make a silhouette. I also decreased the saturation on the stuff that's not supposed to be in focus but I might have done that a little too much.
Did some other changes too but I think you can figure that out yourself.

    Keep up the good work!
