Alien character WIP Crits please! UPDATED!

    Hi!

This is an alien character of some sort that I'm working on right now. What could I do to make it better?
Any crits and advice is useful!

    Thanks guys!

A good rule of thumb when doing characters I've learned is to not make the pose static. Try some silhouettes doing different poses focusing mostly on shape rather than rendering and then when you find one you like then you can start rendering it. I also notice that the character is the same on both sides. Try mixing his costume up so that maybe he has a shoulder pad on the left and some other costume elements on the right so it's not so symmetrical, Asymmetry is what you want to shoot for. I hope my humble opinion has helped! keep up the good work!

The anatomy, especially the facial anatomy, doesn't feel accurate. Also, you've redesigned 'Dobby' from the Harry Potter films.

    My portfolio

Would you like to see my drawr-rings?

Will design for food, provided that we all agree that money is edible.

For starters... Your lighting and form are really off. I'm no expert myself, but you have to constantly remind yourself where your light sources are and the strength of them and how it affects the form that you're rendering. This shit is hard, and it took me a long time to grasp some of it... The best advice I can give is to visualize the object you want to render in your head and keep reminding yourself that dark will push in and light will pop out form. I did a paint over to try and fix the major problems in your piece. Your cheeks looked like they were bits of clay that were slapped onto the face. Darken up the legs, they're too bright for where the light source is, light falls off of objects the further away they are from the light source, plus, you have clothing that would make them super dark. The alien's left eye seems to be as bright as his right even when it seems to be in cast shadow, refer to my painting to get an understanding of how it should look. I added a bit of fill light and a low light on the right to help show form on the dark side of his face. Pay attention to my lighting all around the face... Study the way I lit it and compare it to yours... Hopefully this helps

Thanks for all the help guys! Great advice, especially the paint over. Knew the lighting was off and i usually light my stuff in a different way than I did for this piece. Will definately throw in another light sorce in the scene and try to nail the volumes and design.
To master poses will be part of my next project
Will post an update this afternoon!

And for the Dobby from Harry Potter comment, I realized that too, but I didn't use him as a reference at all. I like the overall design so I will probably use it even tough it kinda looks like him.

Here is a little update. The paintover was very helpful! Still struggeling with the shoulder pad and some of the equipment. Any advice?
Will try and finish the black/grey painting today and then start on the coloring.

Haha, everyone thinks I redesigned dobby with a hint of gollum.
Harry Potter has stolen so much design from other fantasy franchises that everything looks like it. It's hard to come up with something new nowadays.

BTW I'll post an update with color ideas soon.

    its easy to see why

maybe make his shoulder pad big and chunky, his head and the details on it seem very big compared to the very small tight detailing on the body.

Update with the shoulder pad a bit larger and some other stuff on the other shoulder. Should I keep?

I'm a complete beginner so dont take everything I say seriously, but think about culture a bit maybe? He kinda looks tribal in a futuristic way so maybe some piercings on the lips/nose/ears anywhere! think about their society and behaviour it will help you come up with some stuff

    Hope it helps

EDIT: another thing that came in mind, think about the kind of environment they live in. Do they live underwater? Then maybe they have some stuff/accessories fashioned out of reeds and seaweed or something, maybe they have gills? Its an alien so it may not be like how it is on earth but some stuff might help make sense, do they have flippers to swim faster perhaps? etc etc.
