I am planning to use this as a reference for making a oil painting, but there issues with the lighting and the sky.

seems to me not enough difference between the dark and light values ,also from the bottom to the top , the colors need to be changed to portray distance, maybe mist at the back part of the ship

It's not clear what the setting is, outside of this pathway.

As RangerX says, the dark values in the distance should not be as dark as those in the foreground.

Like others have said not really sure what I'm lookin at. I get the general idea of guy walking up staircase that's all spiky and spooky to an entrance. Possibly even the stairs being made of giant rib bones or something. I'd tighten up the forms some.

I'd make the sky less muddy with color. Study some clouds and how they appear with the sun at that angle on a cloudy day (difficult I know). But basically I'd avoid actual sunbeams personally. I'd use the clouds to give a sense of depth to the piece with maybe some breaks in the clouds to the left showing some lighter values to suggest that it's light hitting the stairs from that direction but it feels like the clouds would be off the canvas if there was a break in them at that point.
