    Types of compositions

Hi, im not certain if this is the right place to ask about this
but i was curious as to the different types of compositions that exist
    I shall elaborate

you have compositions that act as a sort of eye trap, where elements
in the image keep eye direction encased inside the image sort of
    what was attempted here

and you have different type of composition of which ... uh ...
don't really understand this type. I suppose directing the eyes
in the manner its being directed here is supposed to give a type
of iconic effect or something, not certain

what other types of compositions exist? how and why do they work?

All composition is meant to direct the viewer to a center of interest. After that anything that achieves that is good composition anything that doesn't is bad composition. The types are only limited by someones imagination. here are some examples

There are many notions on composition...but dpaint just explained the only "rule" - composition directs the eye and flow of the piece - it must do so to support the artist's intent. There are many theories and ideas about composition however, Classical (Golden Rectangle), dynamic symmetry, Rule of Thirds, etc. It's good to be familiar with the various ideas and thoughts. A really good introduction to composition is Jack Hamm's "Drawing Scenery". Much of it deals with space division and balance.

Just an additional note...compositional elements are not always some strong directional line...the human eye is attracted to a variety of things in visual images, strong contrast, hard edges, adjacent complementary colors, detail, etc. They can all be used by the artist to direct the eye in support of the satatement. Look at a lot more things than comics if you are interested in developing a better understanding of composition.
