    Raphael's sketchbook

    Name: Raphael
Age: (edit) 17 (as of this writing)

Well, that's the basic info I can give ya, anymore and I'd have to kill you (kidding).

Feel free to grind, butcher, and criticize me if I ever get lazy on posting to this thread

Also, constructive criticism is highly encouraged, don't be shy on criticizing any mistakes you're going to see; I'm just a 16 yr old anyways

Well then here's an image to get things started

Low quality because I shrunk it down. It'll be a hassle for you guys to view if I uploaded the high pixel one.

I'm going to make a suggestion. Take it or leave it, and it might not be what you want to hear... But study from life more. Work at it until you can draw people convincingly and realistically. The anime style is a powerful tool for generating aesthetic appeal, achieved by exaggerating specific features of of the typical face and body. When you learn proper proportions and realism, you can then experiment with exaggeration and make your own character choices. What happens when you jump straight into "the anime style" and ditch the fundamentals is you work yourself into a corner. Not only are you only able to draw in that style, but your work will always be worse than those who went about learning the proper way. Errors in anatomy and construction will show up, poses will be off, etc.

I only say this because I think you have serious talent, and I think that learning foundations and then establishing your own style will likely give you the best results. I'm not saying stop mimicking the style of artist you like, but work hard to understand their decisions so you can apply that knowledge to your own work.

Its good to see you're already finding heroes to look up to, you have a big name to live up to in art but your work looks promising! Buy books on art, find out what the greats have done before you so you can use what they've learnt and take art further than they did.

Thanks for the advice! I'm always doing fundamentals whenever I can. I'll post a study I just did (Warning: My reference is from a scandalous photo that's been going viral lately. Don't blame me for saving the pic LOL )

Yeah, keep it up! And it would probably be good for you to study the torso area a bit. The left side of the last anime girl looks too straight.

Since there was a suggestion that I do more studies, I'm going to start posting the studies that I normally do here.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. A lot of stuff going on, but here's a sketch I took from my sketchbook. This is still "raw," which means I didn't edit any of it.
