    The Cuckoo

I feel a bit shy posting here, (although I have previously) because I am more of a 'fine artist' than a 'concept artist', so my stuff is quite unlike any in this gallery. But I do love sharing my art so here goes.

    The Cuckoo

    The Cuckoo

This is a piece for my November solo exhibition, titled 'Origin'

    Any comments welcome!

It's interesting. I don't think you are looking for criticism, so I'll just say that I like it. Where is your exhibition?

Oh you can say whatever you like about it, if you have anything to say. Saying 'i like it' alone is so boring anyways

Its stylistic as you can tell, so I'm curious to your opinions, as to whether they are based on stylistic qualms (lighting, figure, style etc) or just plain art technique qualms.

I actually have a serious bone to pick with this one, in the little girl's head position which could have been better placed a bit more to the right.

    Pray, do tell.

The girl's head seems like it's about to roll off, but the rest looks great.

I always enjoy seeing your work.
If I have any problem with this one that there's a lack of confidence in the handling of the clouds.

    Aiiight...

Clouds: The brush stroke is apparent and they seem to want to be puffy/fluffy evening clouds, but the stroke is wispy and doesn't portray fullness.

Light/Shadow: It is a bit inconsistent. Where you apply it, it is generic (Light on top, dark on bottom). The eggs in the nest have odd dark shadows if the light source coming from behind/above. This can apply to most of the painting. The girl has no shadow on her face and arms.

These are all opinions/crits/bs...I do LIKE the painting and I do realize the strength of you work lies in the concept moreso than the execution.

Elwell, what do you mean that there is a lack of confidence with handling the clouds?

(I just don't understand what you mean, because I am quite confident with drawing just about anything, so it is obvious to me you must mean something metaphorical here with the words 'confidence')

    Thank you DeliciousPeter.

You are rather right about the clouds not being what they are meant to be. I will go over that thats a wrong technique thing and the crit is totally valid.

About the light/shadow, there are never really any real shadows/light handlings in my art, this is purposely so because it fits the style. I only use it when body needs to be given to things, and then it is mostly top lit stuff/front lit stuff.

    Thankyou for the comments

It does fit your style...and my only suggestion would to be consistent. In whatever world that girl lives, if no shadow falls on her, then no shadow falls on eggs...
