    Elderscroller´s Sketchbook Journal

Finally, I decided to create a sketchbook journal to track my progress online. I´ve been doodling and sketching since I was in Highschool, but never took it serious enough. After a long long break from drawing, I decided two years ago to better myself and take the long road to becoming an artist. Here is a comparison shot to show the difference of levels and my current status:

Name: 01 level compare small 2.jpg

Size: 441.6 KB

The highschool level drawings were all done using reference, the 2012 ones are sketchbook entries from my mind.

Still a long way to go, especially regarding anatomy and fluid poses. My goal is to be able to draw anything from my mind, especially the human figure.

Good progress and now it's time to start studying! You have a good basic feel for figures now but yeah, as you already know... anatomy anatomy anatomy, gestures, life drawing, perspective and MORE!

    Keep us updated!

ALL good here, lotsa skills for form, lighting and rendering goin on. Congrats! If you wanna study anatomy, I find Glenn Vilippu, Michael Hampton and Mike Matessi all great to help draw figures from imagination. Hope this of some use. Good luck and keep fighting the good fight.

    Hi all!

Some small updates today with pencil sketches (guess it´s my favorite drawing medium ) here are some character and quick weapon designs and a quick portrait. Wonder if anyone recognizes her....I guess not Oh, and just ignore the fencer pose....it is crappy and much too stiff, I know.

This is real nice! If you wanna study more anatomy, I think Bridgman is great, helps you give real emphasis on weight and volume (but what do I know )

Also, your color studies are amazeballs, can't believe you do that in just 15 minutes!

I didn´t sketch lots today because I got carried away a little with one sketch, where I tried to improve my line quality. I started with a lizard head, which then became a lizardman and I couldn´t stop, because this idea of a lizardman noble came into my mind and it ended as this:

    Name: Lizardman.jpg
Views: 1743
Size: 151.2 KBName: Lizardman Noble.jpg
Views: 1747
Size: 406.5 KB

No ref was used here. The frame is not mine and was taken from cgtextures

Hey Markus, great to see you here on CA. I'll be keeping an eye on your sketchbook. Some great progress here and nice to see the two comparisons at the top.
    Keep it up!

Christmas took some time and energy for painting away. Although I managed to make some sketches (have to scan them, when I find the time). Meanwhile here are some messy color sketches (no ref) with limited color palettes. I tried to practise staying loose in sketches like this and not go into detail. I also tried some quick technique for basic armor/metal painting:

    Name: armor.jpg

    Name: ghost king.jpg
Views: 1579
Size: 278.4 KB
    Name: lich.jpg
Views: 1569

Need more time for painting and sketching....days should have 48 hours

How come you are being so hooked up on being able to draw anything from your head? There is nobody who is able to draw everything from their imagination. Although I am happy to see that you are not making the mistake of trying to learn anatomy by making it up yourself, a mistake that I have seen to often. It is certainly a good idea to draw from your imagination and not have to rely entirely on reference. But I'm concerned if you see it as some sort of badge of honour to not use reference. The thing is your imagination have to feed on something and doing studies from life is one of the best ways to do that. Even if you become a master and could potentially draw anything from imagination your work will become repetetive and stale without a constant input from other sources.

I noticed for example that the faces you draw has a distinct lack of variation. The only way to fix that is to draw a whole lot of people with various facial features.

Oh and I really like your noble lizard man.

    Hi Frida!

Oh I´m afraid, I didn´t express my wish to draw anything from my mind too clearly. What I meant by that was to be able to draw basic stuff from my mind and not rely on reference for that. For instance anatomy, human figures, poses, landscapes, being able to construct and design man made objects,... I wouldn´t consider it some kind of badge of honor! Some people do that and these people also look down on people using reference. I´m not ignorant in this, I know how important it is to use reference, especially when you are just in your beginners phase of drawing. Without reference, how can you know, how something really looks like? Anatomy is a great example in this! Observe and study before you can draw that.
By drawing from imagination, I also meant to use reference as a piece of inspiration only or to build up your visual library. It is true that drawing from imagination alone things start to look alike (especially characters) You can always tell, if someone drew characters from mind or with reference. Especially with faces, you start to develop some sort of standard face types. It also tends to look more realistic, if you use reference. What I don´t want to do with reference is copy it 1:1. I don´t look down on people who do this either, because there are some great artist (portraists mostly) out there who do astonishing things, I can only dream about at this point in time.
I for myself would consider drawing from my mind a step towards more freedom in my art. I want to reach a level in my art to be basically able to draw anything from my mind no matter what subject and refine and upgrade my work with reference after.

Glad you like my lizard noble This is a nice example of what I mean. This started out as a sketch with the intent of just practicing line quality. I drew the head and suddenly added a torso and got carried away and boom I had that lizard noble. It is no perfect painting and I could go and use reference to touch it up and even bring it a level further. Painting this was just so much fun and I didn´t worry how an arm looks like or a lizards eye. Its basic forms are in my mind (still not perfect, but they are there) and that´s what I want to be able to do with any subject, especially full figure poses (they make my brain go on a rollercoaster ride if I try to do difficult and twisted poses ). But there are still lots of studies and observations to do before I reach that goal.
