    Bilbo Baggins

I'm doing a picture of Bilbo Baggins holding the arkenstone. I'm going to scan this, print it and paint over it. The drawing could use some refinement but I wanted to post this before I got too into it in case there are any major composition issues, anatomy issues, or anything else.

The color study is just a sketch to show what I'm going to do with the moon. I'm not doing the vest, I'm replacing it with chainmail.

I want him to look very short and middle aged. I'm trying to make his face look focused and determined.

I'm having a lot of trouble with this moon. A couple of people have told me it looks like he has horns. Does it? I'm thinking of eliminating it or moving it somewhere else. Any ideas?

It doesn't look like he has horns, but it does look odd that the crescent of the moon emerges from his behind his head at 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock; maybe it would be better if it were offset a bit. Also, why is the dark side of the moon not dark?

I like his face so far. His pose seems pretty stiff, though. When I mimic that posture, my elbow swings away from my torso.

I would certainly tone down the moon, I think for it to be that bright it would have to have the sun real close up to it, and if that were the case the sky would all be bright red too I imagine.
Careful with the figure, he looks quite slanted, off balance. I think it might work better to express his focus and determination to have his body centered in the composition, and be straight, more like a straight rectangle or a slightly tapered triangle.

The moon looked like that because I found an overexposed reference of the moon and took it far too literally. I lightened everything and I think it's better now. I changed the elbow and the posture also. Somebody told me I should soften the edges of his face so he looks more heroic and less scary, I did that and I like how it turned out.

I'm worried about this chainmail. Does it look like chainmail? I'm not great at simplifying complex forms like this.

I like the sheen of metall in the chainmail but it does look more like tiny scales than rings. Here is tutorial of a simple way of drawing chain mail. http://gold-seven.deviantart.com/gallery/137916#/dc5g9j

You can also remember that when you are drawing or painting things that have many separate little shapes like hair or beads or whatever, you can draw a few key areas in detail and then simply suggest the shapes on the rest, and the brain will just sort of accept that the only suggested areas are as detailed as the ones you spent effort on.

I like the shading on his face. I actually liked the darker shading you had on the previous version but that's just my opinion. Right now I feel that the colors are currently looking a little muted. The sky was definitely too dark before but now maybe it seems too light.

No one is going to be able to tell it's a moon because it's the color of the sun and you are cutting ouff information the reader needs to tell it's a crescent shape. It's also a tangent flattening out the space.

The moon was causing too many problems so I got rid of it. I have also done a lot of work on everything else. Any opinions?

Thanks for the help everyone. That tutorial was really useful Frida Bergholtz.

i think his face has been good since the start, and this recent do-over really took it to the next level. i think you can move in and work the details now.
