    Fex's Sketchbook

I decided I might as well start a sketchbook here These are my newest things and I will not post any of my older stuff here. If you'd want to see some older stuff you can find it in my other websites which are in my signature. Please feel free to comment with any critiques or ideas! I'm here for that

Just as background info on me... Im currently a high school senior who is applying to various colleges in NYC for illustration. I hope to one day work as a concept artist or possible children's/teen books illustrator.

Lovely relaxed style you have. Like the uniqueness to your pictures. I can totally see you as a children's book illustrator! I got that feeling when looking at your pictures.

I have to agree with PollyBoffin, particularly that Smaug is brilliant!

Thank you!! I'm so happy to get some positive feedback
I took a children's book illustration class earlier this year in my high school so I feel comfortable with doing things more fun and childish but recently I've been thinking to try and 'refine' certain pictures to make them a bit more sophisticated and realistic. Hopefully I'll do some and post them up here! I want to make sure I have a some variety in my pictures to prepare for the future

A new character I came up with this past week. He's part honey badger and was made for a comic I was working on this past summer, I'll probably continue it this coming spring. Anywho, I have to get back to making full compositions with backgrounds for my portfolio, so hopefully I'll get some of those done soon... x'D

I was doodling trying to break my art/inspiration block and eventually made this. These are two characters I made a couple years ago, apparently they're brothers...

I enjoy your work more than some I have seen in published children's books. I particularily like the boy reading the book with the dragon.

Something to pay attention to might be to maybe soften the edges and color contrast in other areas of your compostion that are not the focus of attention. Just a suggestion as I am a beginner here, so take it for what it is worth. If I am not explaning that clearly, here is a link to a picture that shows what I mean.

You have a unique style. Many of your marker pieces have streaky spots when covering large areas. That is a big downfall to markers. Have you thought about using watercolors? You can get the same look without the streaks but it takes a little bit to learn to control the paints.

When using watercolors the paper matters more than the watercolors. Printer paper and the sorts won't allow you to blend or lift color out of the paper.

If you are interested in trying it I'd be happy to share some tips.

The only other thing I could say is use a wider range of value in your paintings. You use a lot of the same saturation to shade. If you change it to grey scale it goes flat. Don't be afraid to shade with darker colors or even other colors. Shadows can be colorful. A great way to get past the fear of darker shades is to do a small thumbnail version and work out your colors loosely on that. That will also give you a change to play with lighting without fear of ruining your finished piece.

(to Pencil-Chewer) Thanks for the feedback! I actually do love to use watercolor but haven't done it in a while since I tend to get lazy, but I'll keep it in mind for the future! And I'll definitely work on the tones! Since you pointed that out I realize how right you are x'D

(Aqualeot and qlotzan) Thank you so much~! :3

and as for an art update I did a sketch of Leatherback from Pacific Rim today~ still working on the charcoal a bit, hopefully i can add in some more detail, im still fairly new to the whole charcoal stuff I used to do life drawings in it but characters feel like a completely different world in this medium than the life drawings xD

Squint to see values better! You have a lot of variety in local values, but not so much in the overall composition.
