    Recommended Art Instruction DVD's

    Hi all,

    Okay, my wife is looking for some suggestions of DVD's for me for Christmas. The only requirement really would be that it needs to focus on oil painting. I tried to find some of the The Art Department DVD's, but couldn't find them.

    I would get Matt SMith's for sure Doug. Matt Smith DVDs For me you won't really find a better DVD than Matt's Sonoran Desert one. His San Juan one is good too and is more about painting in the studio.

    Might also check out Scott Christenson's DVDs and books: Scott Christenson.

    These are the main two guys I've studied with...more with Scott but I lean more toward's Matt and prefer his work. Richard Schmid has many DVDs as well.

    @Jeff: Thanks, Man! Figured that you and dpaint would have some suggestions. You got to study with Scott? Nice. I knew about his videos, but the Matt Smith ones look interesting, also. I also checked out some landscape work by Jim Wilcox.

    @Chris: Yeah, I have Donato's first one and had already added his Joan of Arc one to the list. Hoping to get that one, also.

    I have the Scott C DVDs and found them exceedingly boring. Mostly because I dont want to paint like him, hes in the studio the whole time, and he has a monotonous droning voice. I recommend ANY Richard Schmidt DVD, the Kevin Macpherson DVD, the Jim Wilcox DVDs are great. If youre looking for still life, id go with the Quang Ho or David Leffel or michael klein, though the leffel ones are pretty boring though informative to the max. If you are looking for watercolors, the Joseph Zbukvic ones are amazing, i have all of them, or the Eric Tiemens (gouache)



    I myself am looking fro that Drew Struzan one where he paints the hellboy poster, or even the one about his life. The Greg MAnchess one is very enjoyable. I have to say, i didnt find the Donat one as good for some reason. Dan dos santos has a pretty good one too.

    Hey Tim - not surprised to hear that about Scott's. If you don't have Matt's I really recommend that first one - painting in the Sonoran desert. Pretty much exactly like being out there with him.

    Yea, he has an approach to painting that I don't really agree with, all that premixing and tubing of colours. Most of his paintings look the same. At first I really liked them, now they just feel very monotonous. They look like they could have been painted at the exact same time! I don't want to treat my subject matter the same, where's the fun in that. But hey, hes very successful at what he does. that massive ranch he has is testament to it! Im going to order those Matt Smith DVDs, they look interesting! Perfect viewing fo the cold winter months between plein airing!

    Good deal Tim. My study with Scott was interesting. I've taken two of his 10 day "intensive" workshops...the second one was a small group sort of by invitation at his former studio/home. We had a great time for sure - actually running around trails with our packs to set up and catch last light in the Tetons. I will say that I learned a great deal from Scott...about many aspects of being a professional painter. And much of what I learned was what I didn't want to do...ways I didn't want to paint or approach the subject. Quick anecdote I'll always remember - Scott and I set up right next to each other and basically painted the exact same composition (or very close)...I captured the scene fairly well...he didn't, and he was very complimentary and said I had nailed it...he wiped his. It was just very interesting to see his overly designy formula get in the way of his observation. But yeah, I learned a great deal from him and will always owe him that.

    Matt on the other hand - I much prefer his work and hanging out with him. I stay in loose touch with both.

    Oh, another brief anecdote - with Kevin MacPherson - somewhere out there is a picture of me and dpaint (Armand Cabrera) being scolded by Kevin at his easel - like bad schoolboys. What makes it funny is I'm 6'5" and chunky...Armand is 6'7" and seems even taller...Kevin is well below the 6' mark! Anyway...fun times!

    Haha, awesome! Id def. take a workshop with him for the exact reasons you stated. I think the reason we see so many "Scottish" painters is because his way of painting is very formulaic, as you say, just took at Cindy Baron fx. Im assuming Scott got a lot of how he paints from Clyde Aspevig, am I correct?

    Come on, you gotta tell us why you were scolded by Kevin Macpherson!

    LOL - I like that - "Scottish" painters! Ouch. Yeah...that's a weird, weird thing to me, but...I saw it happen to one pretty strong painter. Yeah, hard to say what the appeal is exactly...I think Scott has a strong sense of composition...strong abstract design...and end of story really. Though I'll admit he has expanded over the last few years and pulled off some really nice work...that tends to be "un-Scott-like", iykwim.

    I'm not too up on his connections with Aspevig...I know the rumors but don't share them because it's just so removed from any real info I have. He was one of Clyde's main students for sure...for quite a few years. In the end I don't think he retained too much direct influence from Clyde? None that I could really point to at least...outside of the subject matter anyway. Maybe a lot of sub-context stuff I'm not aware of going on though.

    Oh, that was just a fun thing that Kevin actually wanted to shoot - just because Armand and I were so giant next to him! I think Jean LeGassick took the pics...I've only seen them once.

    Jeff... I'm loving this conversation. Not having the chance to study with a lot of the heavy-hitters for plein-air or studio work, I'm learning a lot.

    I WAS thinking of Scott's video's, but I think that I like Matt's better. Plus, did a lot of plein-air work this summer and hoping to continue it a lot more next year (we finally had a summer of sun, rather than rain).
