so here's my 30 minute sketch from yesterday, my finished commission and finally the finished version of Jack Skellington I did a little while ago.

Today I realized I actually suck at drawing hands. I found that I tend to use the same cookie cutter shapes for hands over and over again. (red box) So I did some hand studies. Also some more anatomy stuff and material studies

So here's some stuff I did for my two classes with CGMA, Analytical Figure Drawing 1 and Intro to Perspective. The figure drawing I'm having pretty much no problems with, but the perspective course is quite a bit more challenging. Anybody have any suggestions for decent books on basic architecture stuff? I think that's one of my main problems here.

I've been away a while, but I plan to start uploading here again. Here's a couple of my last assignments from my previous classes at CGMA. I haven't gone back and improved my 3 point perspective so the figures in the foreground aren't in the same system. The last image I'm pretty happy with since it's the first FINISHED painting of mine I've done in some time, though I feel I could still do more with it. Right now in my art journey I'm not too satisfied with my work, but I feel like I'm just not pushing myself enough and that I can do some pretty good work if I really put my effort into it, which is what I've had trouble with all along. I'd really like to know what I could do better. I know I'm really bad at painting clothes, so I'm going to be working on that for a little while along with working through Scott Robertson's How To Draw book.

wow man! awesome improvement! really impressive why haven´t you participated in any CHOW or COW´s? I saw some creature studies and you have some cool characters so I think it would be a good challenge! Keep up the good stuff!

A couple of things I've been working on..The first was just playing around with designs for one of my characters, and some possible weapons. The second I'd like to bring to a finish, but I'm just not sure what to do with the negative space. Also, thanks stinkypanda, I'll probably do that sometime soon! I just wanted to try and improve my art in general before doing anything like that but I'm in the mood to push myself lately.

Cool stuff! Great improvement so far. My only critique would be that you fall into the trap of worrying too much about the little details. I think the weakest link of your chain is the gesture - your figures are very anatomically correct but mostly stiff. Go to the park and try to capture the gestures around you: no anatomy, no volume, just stick figures (watch Sycra's video on stick figures if you haven't already).

Also this book called "Force - dynamic life drawing for animators" was an eye-opener for me. It's not just for animators

Shoulder to the wheel, my friend!
My sketchbook - Harsh critique always welcome!

Thanks Dina!Yeah that's something I gotta start working on. Once it gets warmer out I'm gonna get out there and start drawing people a lot. I'm also going to be starting my dynamic sketching class in the next few days, so I'm trying to get a head start on that. Went a little overboard with the highlights on the bottom image, but oh well!

So I've started my Dynamic Sketching class. This week we're working on boxes and shading our organic forms, but I haven't started yet. There's a couple of things I did for last week. I was pretty successful with the organic forms, but the textures I could implement more of a gradient from dark to light. I'm going to try and re-do a couple of them for this week.

The character paintings below that are just some quick ones I did in the past 2 days. I really wanted to force myself into a workflow so that it doesn't feel like I'm just messing around with paintings until they're done. I wanted to see what I could do in a short amount of time and have something that was acceptable, and this is what I've got so far. I figured I wanted to get ready to be able to do commissions at some point in the near future. I'll have to start doing things way out of my comfort zone though. I think that aside from my class work I'm going to try and do some studies on things I find difficult. From there, who knows! We'll see soon!

In my class we've been working on sketching objects from observation with focal points in mind, intersecting shapes and now plants from reference and experimenting with adding colour. Other than that, I just put together a bunch of quick sketches of some of my characters from my personal project and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out for quick sketches. I also took this as an opportunity to really design their outfits. I'm sure I'll still make improvements to things that might look awkward, but it's good to finally have something solid! I also did a bunch of figure drawing in the past few days but didn't save any of it.

Some more stuff from my class. Drawing plants from life. Tried to work on my shading, my teacher said it was looking spotty last week. He also wanted us to do a lot of notes! This week we're doing redesigns which I'm super excited about.

Here's a couple of paintings I made using the characters from the group shot I did. I'd like to make one out of all of them. I'll post again once I've done this week's assignment. Doing redesigns based on plants. I'd like to go out of my comfort zone here. I'd like to design some armour, but I'm too comfortable with characters and way too weak with anything else so we'll see how this goes!

There's some obvious talent on display in this thread. Keep doing what you're doing, because you're going places.

jcpahl wow thank you so much for your comment. You have no idea how much that means to me!

So I just finished up this week's assignment for my Dynamic Sketching class. I really had fun with it. My hatching is still pretty poor but I think I was able to convey my ideas alright. The assignment was to redesign a plant into something else. Still being very uncomfortable with anything other than figures, I did armour. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone for this one, but I just couldn't come up with any good designs for anything else. I've been reading architecture books so hopefully that will help but for now here's my assignment and a couple of concept sketches I did to flesh out the look of some of my characters.

I didn't like the redesign I did of Jack Skellington a while back. I feel I really lost the feel of the character, so I spent a half an hour or so to redo it. Below is another one of the character sheets I've been working on.

Thanks kayness, I've been trying to pay attention to that lately!

Some things I'm doing! Not sure if I'll finish the first one. I think it might be a bit boring.

    Omg, I'm just so totally in love with the tiny pieces of art you're calling "quick sketches"! ;A;

The first image was my first attempt at implementing my dynamic sketching process digitally. I have long way to go, but it's something I guess. I think I got caught up in the details resulting in a stiff image. I'm going to draw it again.

Next are some studies from google images with a sketch on the side, then decided to refine the sketch a bit. Under that is some exploration for a race I made for my personal project.

They started out being my version of an elf like race, but I felt that it would be a nice change to draw some larger figures so I made them a bit hefty. A group of them broke away from their malevolent brethren and traveled to the central continent in my story to lead a life of benevolence. I'm hoping to make the last image a finished painting.Name: CactusPaladin.jpg

I got sick a few days ago, so I haven't done much over the past week or so. I mostly just played around with my other fantasy race and how I want them to look. The original idea was that they're a grumpy race of old looking men who have faces that always look like they're mad. They don't often interact much with outsiders, but they're not evil. The first image is just of a couple of outfits to get my ideas down before I forget about them.

A few of the head designs I did ended up looking a bit too much like other existing designs, I think. The first couple of rows look a bit much like Dunmer from the Elder Scrolls, and the fourth row looks a bit like those white walker things from Game of Thrones. Ayayayay. Think I'll use the far right on the third and final rows.

This is just a quick painting of my Skyrim character that I did while I was getting over my cold. I woke up the next day and saw it again and thought "Damn, that actually doesn't look very good. Looks too flat!" which led to me doing an actual illustration of him, this time THINKING about all the volumes of his face. I feel I could have been more successful in doing so if I had used darker shadows, but I'm going to make a point to do some darker stuff today.

And finally, I should slap myself on the face for not practicing anatomy for a while. Last night I had a good photo shoot with myself so I could have some of my own reference. Here's what became of that!

Here's another fanart painting I did of my guy from Skyrim. Took advantage of my..glowy jellyfish thing my mom got me for xmas and used it as the red light in my ref picture. Below are some quick concepts I did for my race of grumpy men. I wanted to give them lots of baggage to show that they're mostly wanderers, hoarders and merchants.

Whoa your sketchbook is so awesome, gives me so many ideas for things I need to work on personally which is concept design. Those sketches youre doing for your class came out really well and It definitely helped you out when designing the armors, quite brilliant, Keep painting though and keep doing what you're doing because its going great
