    IOW #41: Field Guide Page

Illustration of the Week #40: Field Guide Page

This is a two week topic. Have any topic suggestions? Post them in the suggestions thread!

    Topic
This weeks topic is Field Guide Page.
Your task is to create a page for a field guide. The can choose the subject--birds, mammals, insects, plants, rocks, etc, but they must be real and not made up (no aliens or anything). You can paint either just one species/rock type, or you can paint multiple ones and compare/contrast them. You can paint just a single view if you want, but often a couple views is best. Remember that for field guides the main goal is not necessarily shiny rendering, but rather identification! Take a look at how existing field guides are done. Often then flatten or simplify things, paint things in profile, will emphasize certain unique characteristics which are used in identification, or will put arrows pointing those aspects out.

    Deadline
The deadline is Sunday 9th of December, 23:59 GMT

Thought I would share a similar piece I did over the summer for a field station in NY on a native species of crayfish versus an invasive - not my submission - but just to share.

    I think I'll draw some trilobites ...!

Update: here's five. The plan is to do one of each order in the Ordovician, so 3 more to go. Not sure how the final composition will be, but I think I'll keep the sketchbook grain.
