    Smile Croco's sketchbook

    Hi everyone !

I've been drawing for a few years now, mostly sketches from life, studies, and a few speed paintings on my computer... I've been a bit busy earlier this year, but now I'm back at it.
I sometimes wander around here, and there's a lot of really amazing stuff ; I can't keep up with that, but at least I can improve a bit with practice and time.

I hope this thread will help me stay motivated, and I'll try to update as often as possible.

Of course, any feedback or criticism is really appreciated.

Ok, here goes, some stuff from the last few weeks :

Beep, time for an update ! I've been trying to go back to basic volumes and proportions (it's been a few years since I last opened those Loomis / Hogarth books), plus a few studies from pictures.

Not really happy with the results. A lot of proportions are off (the heads were a real nightmare), I had troubles figuring out the volumes and the structures... Well, maybe next time.

Keep on with the loomis and the studying. Don't feel you need to rush through your studies, you can't become a great artist by rushing, you have to slow down to notice the small things like the shape correlation between objects in your scene, the way light is effecting form....etc. Look twice act once.

Thanks for your advice Chris, I'll work on that.

I only had time for a couple pages this week (a few studies from pictures) and my schedule won't get better before the end of the month...

I can now see how distorted the last head looks... I guess it was a good idea to stop before it would get worse. I was sleepy anyway.

Edit : A "quick" painting before going to bed. I bought a bunch of apples the other day, without realizing I do not particularly like apples (thankfully I've done smarter things in my life) ; I could at least paint them. This one took me a lot longer than I expected (more than one hour), the various tones were hard to identify and to mix, but I'm rather satisfied with the result, considering how it started.

Looks like you know what you're doing, a lot of studies and some imagination work.

I'd suggest taking your time for some of the studies and sometimes the proportions are off. Remember that as long as you're studying you're not in a rush.
    Looking forward for more

    Thanks for your comment TomSeas,

I realize I sometime rush through my drawings ; I guess It's because I'm trying to see quickly if the drawing is "worth" continuing or if I should get a better start... I have to fight that urge.

A bit busy this week so just a couple of B&W studies from pictures...

Sleep well then! I love the pillar house, beautiful. The last couple of digitals are my favourites so far. Also, well done with the posemaniacs.. Your figuer drawing is improving.

Here's for today : a few pages of posemaniacs (I'm gonna stop posting these here, nothing really interesting...), anatomy sketches from mind and a few photoshop studies from pictures (from http://artists.pixelovely.com/practi...igure-drawing/ and random google images).
I found out "lasso tool + invert selection" is a great way to be more precise with brush strokes.

Ctrlpaint.com has been a huge help for these.

Nice, Nice, Nice! Beautiful updates Croco.
I love the kid portrait. I also think you nailed the banana. I think you are becoming quite good with values, be it colors or gray scale. your environments are my favorites.

Thanks again for your feedback Mepainter !

I've been trying to build figures from mind lately ; a lot of junk came out, also a few "huh, could be worse" ones. A few posemaniacs pages (not uploaded). Going "back" to basics (skeleton, then major landmarks, then volumes and muscles) was actually a big help ; I realized that trying to skip steps always hurts later in the drawing (unbalanced pose, weird proportions...).

I like how you simplify the figures in that one, they make funny characters themselves Do more landscapes, the colours in that last one are awesome.

@Yardmouse, Mepainter : Thanks ! I'll be making more of those in the future ; still need a lot of training.

Small update for today : a couple pages of pencil faces from mind, one page of quick silhouettes from mind (got the idea from another sketchbook in here).

Here's the 2 days ago update ; had to delete the previous post due to a migration bug.

A few sketches and photoshop studies from movie screenshots, still trying to get the colors right. Also played a bit with textures.

And here's today's update. A couple speedpaints from mind, and more movie screenshot studies (I think you can guess which ones)...

Not a very productive week ; I just took time to do a couple portraits (photo references). Messing up proportions takes forever to fix, so the second one actually needed a lot less time than the first.

Great studies, I like a lot your colors in those environments too! Would love to see some imagination work.
