    Wuggy's Sketchbook

    Well, this is a tad intimidating to do.

    Anyway, I'm Wuggy, I'd like to be a good artist some day. This is my sketchbook to record my process in approaching that goal. While I've been doing this kind of stuff for a while, I'm not going to flood this sketchbook with my backlog, I'm sure both me and you can appreciate that.

    I work a three-shift job for now, which makes my practicing hours a tad unreliable, which is also a reason why I do a whole lot silhouettes and thumbnails, they're quick and efficient to do. I do try the best I can to practice as much as I can, but you know, here in the tree you have to make do. Or maybe I'm just making excuses to justify laziness. Uh oh!

    Go to the latest page to see latest progress, duh!

    Having some major problems with Photoshop. Just keeps crashing whatever I do. Well, at least I got some work done.

    A little something about me relating to these following images:

    I work in a library. Most of my time there consists of me being at the counter, doing customer service. However, there are long times each day when no one actually needs my help. They come in, say "Hi!" to me and go about their business. So what I do with my all this time? I sketch on these little pieces of paper we have. Here's what I did today:

    Thanks for the critique! I love your environment speedpaintings, you did an awesome job of quickly rendering light and space. You may want to try doing some form and light studies, it might help you think of your characters with a bit more depth. Keep at it!

    @vagabond_king

    You're welcome on the critique. I'm always a bit nervous when doing those, because I feel like I come across more negative that I would intend. I'm definitely going to follow your progress. Also, yeah, light and form are high on my priority list. Thanks for checking out the sketchbook!

    @lionheartGFX

    Thank you lionheartGFX I'm intending to cultivate the pencil sketches I do at work into digital works... as soon as I find enough time (and a fix for my always-crashing photoshop).

    Anyway, here's a bit more sketching done at work!

    I'm cultivating one of my pencil sketches into more finished state. Here's where I'm at right now. I'm kind of afraid to go from this point, because I always feel I'm making everything worse once I start getting into the nitty-gritty.

    My little sister's 19th birthday is tomorrow. As a gift I wanted to do a little portrait of her. It's a shame how frustrating doing this was since my photoshop keeps crashing very frequently for some reason. Me and Wacom support have been trying to figure it out vigorously, but I think I'll just end up reformatting my computer entirely.

    I've been designing an album cover for a friend's band. Basically it seems that they want a 70's prog-rock-ish, surreal album cover even though they're having a hard time trying to explain what exactly they want (I think they mistake me for an impressionist or something). I've been mocking about with a few thumbnails as well as doing some pencil work at my workplace.

    If someone's not aware, this thing is a great resource for gesture drawing practices: http://www.posemaniacs.com/thirtysecond

    I crank it to 60 seconds so this following piece took precisely 48 minutes (if I don't totally suck at counting).

    I made an entry for the latest design ( which you can find here ), the theme was "Space Pirate" and I came up with this set of three characters:

    Hi
    Thanks for visiting my thread.
    Your sketchbook is awesome. I especially like your sunken forest entries.
    Your sense of design is promising and the silhuettes are very good.

    It's been a long time. I haven't stopped working on art, but there's been multiple complications on both technical and personal level. However, now I have A LOT of free time in my hands so I should start updating this book more regularly again.

    So, what I did this time isn't very refined (maybe barely even presentable, I dunno), I wanted to play around with the relationships between colors and see how much I could achieve with minimal work.

    @CyrilMegem Thanks!

    Another little piece in a row. I did some silhouettes without much of an aim, then I did a quick block of value on them and it turns out they are space ninjas!

    Ok, I'm kind of proud of this. I'm always a bit intimidated about drawing tech, because that's the area where I'm the least experienced but I feel like I did way better here than I expected. I wanted to do fairly quick transport ships that are 1-2 manned and have relatively same design aesthetic while clearly looking different.

    Name:  Transportships.png
Views: 692
Size:  237.3 KB

    By the way, the bottom one and the middle-right one are the same ship transformed. I really liked how I was able to make it unique to the point that one is vertical and one is horizontal.

    Mechanical stuff from your last post looks significantly better than some of your earlier work dude. Make sure if you don't know anatomy not to make it up...look up the structure of the bones of the hand for example. onwards and upwards!

    @Ghast, Thanks, based on your comment I did a very quick anatomy study. A full body one, though, and somewhat small scale. I'll move onto specific body parts next where I'll get more detail and accuracy in terms of bone structure and muscles next.

    Ok, some penmanship time. I did some small sketches of side-view buildings whilst keeping a similar design aesthetic all throughout.

    @Mosen, Thank you very much! The intention is to learn, here so I'm glad that people are seeing some improvement in my work.

    Anyway, I've been working a bit on and off on this character/creature piece. There's a lot of polishing to be done in the way of adjusting values and colors, getting rid of linework and generally polishing the image, but I'm generally satisfied with what this is shaping up to be:

    Name:  actionposewip.png
Views: 641
Size:  338.9 KB

    There's obviously some areas I haven't really even touched upon that much including the cape and the spear/trident.

    Nice work! How long did it take to get to this stage? I like the cape a lot, even with the line work

    @Mosen Thanks again! I can't really give a realistic timescale on this one since my progress on it has been so fragmented and modular (and I worked on two different versions on it at the same time to decide what technique I would go with). So, sorry. All I can say is that it's taken... plethora of hours.

    @Rostas, thank you very much!
