    Hi Brendan,

I like these two. A wizard definately needs a cape and a wizard-hat.
Just make sure the body doesn't get too organic-looking if it is supposed to be a robot. Also his hands could maybe be a little more robotic if you know what I mean. They look very human-like now.
    I like the setting in
this one , very dramatic and the cat is very funny.
    Cheers!

thanks buzz, your comment about the human anatomy helped push my idea forward and past this. I have something in mind that should be much better, hopefully I'll be able to post a WIP tonight.

(also thanks for getting me to the second page, now load times will be a lot shorter!)

I'm glad you guys like this one, I have to keep moving forward with it quickly before I stop liking it (which is a frequent fate of my drawings).

yeah, cats are great, I have 3.

here's some more: added values as well as tweaked and moved the robot's elements.

    nice...nice

good sketches. the details especially, are inspiring for me. Your characters in dynamic positions and I know I have the problem of drawing characters way too static so this pushes me. Very nice work. I enjoy it. post some more. ciao.

    hiyas!

    here's the basically done drawing:

and here's two quick color comps:

I made a page of 4 copies of the drawing at 72dpi so I can quickly cover them with transparent color and figure out what I want my pallette to be like. I'll probably do one more before I start working on the full rez image, and pick the one that works the best. I'll probably post WIP shots of the painting, if time allows (only 5 more days until the t-shirt designs need to be submitted!).

Hey cool t shirt design. I like the pose.
I actually think I would like to wear the pencil sketch of that over the colour ones though! Keep playing with the possible colourings

    Brendan, that's looking great.
IMHO I like the blue robot best, don't know what other people think about this. If time permits maybe you can also try a warmer tone for the floor to give some contrast between him and the background. (Don't know if it will work.)
The smoke looks really cool already.

here's the third color comp. I think I'm going to go in this direction, blue robot, warmish ground (I'm going to push the ground a little more orange, but I need it to stay darker than the robot, so we'll see.), and grey-green background. I might have the bg be a wall, but I'm not sure since I'm kind of modeling this after a tarot card design (not sure how clear it is, but there's a roman numeral I above the CA url.

I'm going to try to add more hydraulic fluid/blood, reciprocating saw motion and sparks to try to keep the image from getting too static

endregan, buzzz, steak, thanks for the kind words and letting me know the colors weren't there yet.

uh oh...I had assumed the cloth would be black or white, should I prepare for lime green or blaze orange instead?

good shit man. i dont know much about shirt design, but the image itself is very cool, but im saddened that the circle with 1' and 0's is becoming a little lost in the design.

    good work.

hey, thanks prostate, I'm glad you like it. There's a lot of work to do before it's done, though. Don't worry about the binary magic circle, that has to come back stronger or I'll lose the concept I started with.

Besides finishing the final render, I am starting to worry about how I'm going to set it on the shirt. I'll have to do some research, see what the cool kids are doing with shirts these days.

    a couple hours later:

the binary circle is on a separate layer so I can easily erase the whole thing, I'm not certain this is how I want it to look.

    hey, thanks liam!

the t-shirt contest thread is a sticky in the lounge started by el presidente jetpack42. the deadline is september 9 sometime in the evening PST I forget when exactly.

I think I'm looking an all nighter tonight to get this fully cleaned-up and set in a t-shirt layout (I'm busy tomorrow and will be away from home).

    stay tuned...

well, I'm not certain where things sit with the Tshirt contest, so I figured I'll post the image that I submitted on 9/9.

If I have time (if the deadline moves back) I'll do some more work on this, so feel free to voice sugestions!

    quick little update

Got busy last weekend and haven't drawn much since finishing the paint of self-destructo mister roboto.

After advising someone else to try it, I decided I should do it myself: a page of warriors and other fantasy standards:

Wow, I really like the shirt design. I haven't seen any of the other entries, but I would so wear a shirt with that on it. It's a great concept and great render. Good job!

Great sketchbook, Brendan! Awesome work ethic too. That giantkiller piece would make a cool painting. And I too would wear a t-shirt with that rad robot, excellent job!

I'll be watching this thread for updates.

    Have fun!~~~JadeDragon

NIce work Brendan. The robo-wizard piece is on eof your better pieces.

I think you should probably spend a little more time on the sparks effect and the kitten i a little rough too.

Also, I would recommend getting some reference of some shiny barrels or tubes so you can see how to work in some reflections and whatnot to make him look a bit more metallic.

Some day, I too will post a finished piece again, like the good ol days.... grrr....

    NIce B, keep it up.....

Can I call you B? Thats a good nickname for you: "B".

jade dragon, I_am: thanks for the nice comments!

muttonhead: good crits, thanks. those will be good things to strengthen on this image before it finds a permanent home in my portfolio.

now to go see what you've been posting if it's not finished work...

this is a 20-30 minute warmup, done from a photo in the current Nat'l Geographic

another page, the girl is a quick 5-minute sketch from the same Nat'l Geo.
