    ROUND #279, Bubble Bobble re-design

    topic:

    ROUND#279, Bubble Bobble re-design

this week we are going to be doing a re-design of the bubble blowing dragon-like creatures from the classic N.E.S. game "Bubble Bobble".

you can choose to put them in any kind of genre you wish. you can choose super cutsie, or real and terrifying. but they should include their main form of attack which is blowing bubbles that encapsulate their enemies. pretty open beyond that so just have fun with it.

    Requirements this week...

-the creatures should be dragon like.

    -genre is up to you.

    - the creatures must be shown using it's bubble attack.

    Deadline:

    November 13th 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

Here is a quick sketch that I started to polish the lines up. Was thinking of adding another one in behind him and maybe a bubble with a little monster floating around? Maybe this is too cartoony?Name: bobblebubblewip2.jpg

marcoferrigno - thanks man, i just started exactly like you, with the values first, then on an overlay layer i played around quite a bit with different color choices, and finally landed on a bluish body, with a desaturated yellow/green for the legs and lower body, then i wanted to have a stark contrast by giving hiim a reddish orange face/head. kind of like a salmon... the metallic sheen comes from how i did the greyscales mostly, i had a pretty dark underside with a pretty bright light source overhead. plus the stark white highlights give it a kind of metallic look. also i originally had the red going back further into his main section, but then went lightly over it with the light blue, giving it that washed out look. i was planning on bumping up the colors more with another overlay layr, but unfortunately my painter program crashed on me ... time to invest in photoshop... ha.

for your design, i like the design and shape of the overall dragon, it looks awesome! i think the values could be blended a bit better maybe if you were to go in with a bigger soft brush, and blended in the values a bit more. then maybe go back in and give it some more texture with a chunky hard brush, and working from big to small, build up some detail in places where you want to draw attention (the face and back)

daniel hurd - thanks man! im digging your line work! i dont think its too cartoony, i thiink it works great for the topic!

Nice pose, I like the opening in the throat, reminds me of a water gun which is a smart idea.

@francois - not bad yourself! I like the geometrical spires coming off his shoulders. Cool concept, I will be looking forward to seeing it finished.

Not actually participating (because I didn't redesign anything), but the topic inspired me to do this:

@ricardops I love the look you got going. Maybe if you could implement the tendril things on the sides of the mouth it would look even cooler.

Hi all... first time doing this type of work. This sounds like a lot of fun (Just started doing creature design... mainly a traditional oil painter). For my guy, he generates the bubbles from the side of the body, rather than the mouth. Need to make him a bit more dragon-like, though. But, here's the first part. Any comments or critiques are greatly appreciated, since this is a new venture for me.

    Hey hey CA
I haven't done a CoW in a long time, so here's what I've got! I tried to keep the concept of the original character: Green, yellow spines down the back, short pink arms, giant eyes, three toes and fingers, two big buck teeth. I did add wings though, I felt like he looked too much like a T-Rex and not a dragon without them. I've still got quite a bit of work to go. EDIT: It looks really dark on the web too... gotta fix that.
