    CROSSOVER!!! - IDW # 218 / EOW # 198 Merfolk Colony

    Name: IDW Banner 100-200 Small.jpg
Views: 912
Size: 479.2 KB

    Topic: Merfolk Colony
    Deadline: Sunday, November 4

    Find the EOW thread here.

We have a special crossover and partner edition of IDW and EOW this week. There are a few things that are a bit different this time round- this will be a 2 person partner round. Each team must submit to both IDW and EOW.

Merfolk Colony: As an advanced underwater culture, they have created many intriguing items to help them in their day to day lives, and to help them understand our world. Your task is to show 2 of any of the following technologies:

    A) Earthnet Research Station- a mer and human joint floating research vessel/platform/station/pod. This was created to help bridge the gap of knowledge between the terrestrial world and the aquatic, as well as taking advantage that multiple viewpoints can give to other fields of research.

    B) Farm Drone- Crops such as seaweeds and fish are important underwater crops. Huge areas of kelp forests and spawning corrals exist around the world and are tended by agricultural drones.

    C) Underwater Ambulance- A fast and stable carrier which transports the injured to a medical care facility.

    D) Tide Power Generator- The never ending movement of water as caused by the Moon is a completely renewable and environmentally safe power safe that is accessible everywhere. These generators come in a variety of sizes for different purposes.

    E) Land Prosthesis- A vehicle for the Mer body that allows brief visits on land primarily in order to deal with terrestrial folk. These are key for trade and diplomatic visits, though that by no means is the limit of their use.

Please note again that this is a 2 person partner round! Each team must submit to both IDW and EOW. Teams submitting to only one or the other will not be taken to poll. As such, the names of both partners must be on the final entries even if only one partner worked on that specific image.

    Mer-Tech

Not sure if this'll count for anything seeing as I'm waiting on one person in particular to be my partner. In the mean time, here's some roughs to get the ball rolling anyway. Possibly a bit large for an average prosthesis, but it's nice to get something down.

I suppose I should ask Pixie Trick, is there a size limit on what the Merfolk use to walk on land? How personal should it be?

The prosthesis should be made for an individual. Prosthesis from wiki, "..is an artificial device extension that replaces a missing body part." Mer-people technically aren't missing anything at all, they're just different, but what we're looking at is something that is part of their lifestyle in the same way a prosthesis is to a human. I'm not going to give a size limitation (unless you've completely lost track of scale), but if it looks like they wouldn't be able to get through a door or in an elevator it kind of defeats the purpose. The whole point is to interact with people, right?

Here are some ideas I've been working on. I wanted to make the land prosthesis more organic as if the Merfolk civilization pulled from its surroundings. I just had a hard time imagine them making steel and other metals. I now it may seems a little big but I want to stick with this and I am trying to design the Earthnet Research Center around its size as if the human had accommodated to the Merfolk's needs.

DNVN, if you still need a partner, I'd love to work together.

scorge - Heya scorge! I like the subtle, thin legs of #1. Also, #6 and #9 have nice throne-like seats which seem appropriate for the diplomatic/trading purpose. #4 got some great shapes as well.
Vorga- I like your take on the subject. The coral structures are very fitting, #5 would be my favourite. Seems a bit on the large size, more like a vehicle. Not sure, 'prosthesis' may be a tricky definition.

Here's a few thumbs for the merfolk prosthesis. CA seems to be resizing again for some reason... Right-click and view for normal size.

I figured these things should be relatively light and allow plenty of freedom for interaction to fit the 'prosthesis' feel.

As a warmup, and perhaps to get some ideas for the merfolk culture itself I also did some merfolk sketches. Posted them HERE.

ANTHIS: Thanks for the feedback. From your sketches I really like the legs on #1 and I like how you have thought about supporting the body on the rest. That was kind of hard for me decide on since I couldn't help and think of comfort.

DNVN: Great. I'm also working on the research center but that might have to come after I finish the transport design. Hopefully I can finish both in time.

@ Anthis: Man, them's some killer ideas brother. I really like the suspension concept. I'll be steering away from what I've got so far, aiming more for the lightweight versions of Mer-Tech prosthesis. Sketches soon!
@Vorga: Very nice start! And it would appear that your going for both enviro and prosthesis, I admire your courage. The prosthesis is an intriguing idea, especially having to do with the materials coming from the environment. Only issue would be, how would the Merfolk interact with their land environment if their encapsulated? Keep up the good work.

@ Dave Melvin : Maybe they're telepathic mermaids that don't want nasty human germs all over them?

Hah! Great point! I don't even like the fact that I have those same human germs all over myself. Keep on keeping on my friend.

Vorga: Be sure to post your enviro related stuff over in the EOW thread as well- you might get a few more helpful crits on that area over there.

Chris Sanders and I did some work on the merfolk themselves. He posted some designs here and I used those to practice a bit and change things around. Some clothing designs too, to get a feel for general merfolk culture.

Then some more prosthetics. We might go for a revised version of #2
Also put some environment thumbs in the EOW thread.

Most of it pretty sketchy, just generating ideas.

Vorga; Thanks for the comment. Good call on adding a perspective grid to your sketch. Though I'm not sure if you're actually using it. Liking the submarine and the pod-like thing emerging on the right. Seems to be one of your prosthetic pods! Might want to add a ramp or something so they can enter. Unless it floats, naturally. Good luck finishing!

Also- does anyone know a suitable method for sending one another .PSD documents? Wondering how you guys handle that.

So I had to scrap the old versions, too big and clumsy. Decided to go with something a little more personal to the user. Silhouettes for now. I'll go in and explore the surfaces more, play with the tech and such.

Anthis, your designs are killing me! So imaginative and appropriate. As usual, it appears that you are going to be some tough competition. I like it.

By the way, I'll be teaming up with Vyse for this round.

@ anthis : Yeah that was a grid from another idea that I forgot to delete. I usually don't make a grid until after the sketch that way I'm not tied down. I love #1 from your latest sketch of the prothesis and I really like the tails on your mermaid designs.

@ Dave Melvin: I like the last of your latest designs. If I could change one thing it would be to make sure his tail doesn't touch the ground. Great work.

@ Care: I'm digging the first one on the bottom row.

Here is my latest WIP. The idea is that it can hover because mermaids are magical! Joy!
