I took a look at those portfolios people have coming out of the Animation Portfolio Workshop and man, I am intimidated yet I took the time trying to study how they construct stuff and it seems a lot more complicated compared to our proccess.

    http://www.animationportfolioworkshop.com/students-2

Looking through their process it looks like a lot of construction lines are drawn out to suggest the anatomical structure as well as what they see. I guess more focused studies of anatomical construction wouldn't hurt?

I've also been given a lot of advice to practice drawing 3d shapes at every angle but I am not exactly sure how to approach it. Whenever I do it I am not sure if I am doing it right or how to approach construction of those 3d shapes whether or not to use perspective lines or not, or to just imagine the vanishing points and horizon level and try to draw it with good perspective. The only issue I am finding is actually giving the 3d shapes good perspective. I feel that it might be very essential to progress through with constructions of complicated objects as it the foundation is always important.

Offical: I actually really liked what you had before, there are some really interesting shapes in that 'gestural design' you had in your previous post. For this one, I'd remove the buttons, get rid of the fishlips (sorry for anyone who has lips like that, LOL!) And she's kind of slanted in her first pose, prob just a scanning error, happens all the time with me.

Kamil: Yes, its tough work. I don't think you can fake structure, you have to know whats going on or it wont sell and that takes some practice. Drawing ellipses and spheres in perspective is just drawing that takes time. You have to study from life and practice, practice, practice. there's no secret!

Thanks for the advice, about your character I really like the overall design for him but I feel as though the expression aren't emotional or I can't really feel the emotion of the character although I can differentiate expressions. Perhaps maybe pushing those facial muscled might helps and since it's not all that realistic you could really push the face to it's limits .

Are we suppose to be starting something new or finalizing our character designs this week? Btw dunnstar a little extra advice on the expressions, when I was facing the issue with my character, I felt that the reason why my expressions were not so expressive were due to the fact that I had a fear of distorting the proportions of my characters face but then I said to myself that it is just a facial expression doodle so just don't give a shit about getting him to look on model. This allowed me to be unrestricted to my fear of distorting the proportions, this also worked well with my action pose doodles. Which reminds me, I did a few doodles for my action poses yet none of them are on model(because I got a little excited to do them and did them before rotation >_<) so should I post them up or not?

Well it was suppose to be action poses this week, but only me and offical got the character model done. So, this week is just to get something finished, models, actions whatever. Storyboard should follow, then we are just about done. =[

as for posting what you got, I don't see the harm in it. I see you were looking at the workshop, have you given up on applying this year?

I'm pretty sure your advice hit the nail, i'll prob doodle some new stuff later today.

No at all matey! I just took an interest in the workshop because I was quite baffled at the level of work put out by their students. The workshop is sort of like a fall back plan, because I heard that art fundies is not really beneficial towards building an animation portfolio except for the access to free life drawing classes. I really hope to get in this year yet I also feel my work ain't up to the standards comparing my work to you or people getting their portfolios done at the workshop.

I also don't really get what you mean by done? Are the drawings we are doing now for the portfolio or is it just to help us ease into the final portfolio drawings?

Well, honestly Kamil, I'll say the portfolios you're looking at are the creme de le crop, not to trivalize the competition but all you need to do is get on the waiting list and you have a good chance of getting an offer. That I do think is possible with hard work and perseverance. Though we all have a long way to go. It's good to look into alternatives. I would indeed recommend workshop over fundamentals. I can't afford either so if i don't get in this year, well its just me working on my portfolio for another year.

Finally, to clarify what I mean by "done". I don't think anything we've posted is fit for the portfolio just yet. (except a few of denaliah peices) The idea behind this is to get everyone thinking about it and working towards it. One week is long enough and short enough that you can really scribble some idea down and refine it in a later date. I mean honestly, once you got a basic concept down, half the work is done. everything from there is meticulous refining. When I say me and Offical got something done, it means we've begun the process of finishing a peice. (not just thinking about it) We've got a good idea not just general of what were gonna do.. I hope that clears that up.

Hey guys! I just wanted to put some more of my character sketches, so I was wondering if you guys have any advice. I am still stuck in the variation and development phase as I think that way I will constantly evolve my characters personality and such. After I started communicating with my character through drawing of course I discovered that he really likes cheese burgers and that he hides them at the back of his pants so the sergeant does not take notice and eats it quickly behind the sergeant's back . I also discovered that he was quite bored with his hat and started wearing a beret instead because he said it looks cooler and people will easily be able to understand his background more.

Blarg. Christmas season is going to kick my ass. I work at a chocolate shop so my hours just skyrocketed. I've been drawing, but not much and nothing for portfolio. I hate being such a lazy bastard.

@kamikazel33t - He's looking better, but I still think his waist line should be moved up a bit to give him longer legs. I can see you started a side view, but didn't quite get it. Draw lines (or use the lines of the graph paper) to match up the features of the face to make sure the front and side views are the same.

I think we've all slowed down a bit, but let's keep pushing! There's a lot of ground to cover still.

@OfficialLamp I think we've been neglecting object drawing and room drawing as well, we should do tons of practice on that especially considering that the story mark is only for storyboard and Object drawing and I think that was one of the things which truly lowered your potential mark. Composition is another mark we need to worry about as well! GAH! so much work so little time >_<!

Kamil: I think keeping a burger in your pocket is a bit silly. Perhaps a hankerchief or utensils, to suggest he's an avid burger fan. and then show that quirk in the action poses, him gorging on food in an action pose would be really cool.

About room drawings and object drawings I agree wholeheartidly, I've been drawing so much room drawings I'm sick of em, not one is good enough though. Definitely my weakest area.

@OfficialLamp I got lucky, I work at the stadium but since hockey is on strike my shifts have been cut down to 10-15 hours a week. Stiff upper lip, we have December, janurary, feburary. Still 3 months left!

I can sense everyone is crunching for time these few weeks, so it would seems silly to add to the pressure. So good luck everyone, try and get something Sheridan related done and share it.

Anyone whos up for it, storyboards next week Sunday. I'd love to look at em!

@Officiallamp Sorry I forgot to thank you on your critique, I am working on giving him a shortened torso. Btw when you talk about legs do you mean from crotch to bottom of the feet or from hip to bottom of feet? because over there I was thinking of making his legs equal to the size of his torso(crotch to bottom of the feet) so are you suggesting that I make his legs to be as long as his the height of his head and torso?(normal human proportions)
@Dunnstar I guess my mindset at the time was that it was a cartoon so it was okay to be silly like that(I guess I was thinking too much a long the long lines of Ed from ed, edd and eddy). I actually did have a food related action pose in mind, I actually did some for my previous character revision but they were very rough and were just to get an idea of what to do for one I'll post em in here anyway.

I am having trouble generating a username/password, is anyone else having the same problem? Every time I fill in the information(student number and birth date), I am faced with a message saying "Warning: Staff passwords cannot be reset with this utility." in the place of where you would receive the username an passwords.

well its your character you can be as silly as you want with it. I was just sharing my opinion on it.

I'm not sure what you're talking about for the 'username/password' situation. For conceptart?
@denaliah: Just animation, seneca and Sheridan. Probably Illustration since its free once you pay the fee. Why? What about you?

Sorry, if I was being a bit defendant about my character >_<, I just wanted to know if it would hurt my chances on my college application to me this takes precedence over what my character is rendered with and what not.

Well I received the student number by email from Sheridan but now I am having trouble creating an account, and what I mentioned before is what is occuring.

I'm not sure what backup options to go with yet, all I know is I should have them since I remember the fee you pay to the OCAS website includes 3 or 5 choices, so might as well get my money's worth. Oh also how do I send a transcript from OCAD to sheridan?

Actually I just called them and asked, you can use your high school ones for that. But if you really want to, you have to set it up under your ocas account. Just add a "post secondary" school. and OCAD will bill you 30 bucks to send it.

Oh and Kamil you didn't sound defensive at all. I just don't want to stiffle your creativity. if your gut wants your character to have burgers in your pocket. BY GOD! Let there be burgers in his pocket!

Hey guys! Did you just see the new storyboard characters? I feel that it would require more work to keep them on model as compared to the previous ones. I guess they are trying something different for the 2013 applicants especially how they gave us wider storyboards.

Ohh? They made new ones this year? So glad because I did not like Carol or Doug. Can you link them, I can't seem to locate the ones for this year?
