    Too close for too long

I've been looking at this painting for over 3 months now (camp, vacation, and now my first semester at art school have all gotten in the way), and it's gotten to the point that I don't have an opinion anymore. At least my opinion is "I've put this much work in. It's staying like this.".
    So tell me otherwise.

(Open the image in a new tab, the frame is cutting some of it off.)

    Thanks,
    Peter

What's the idea behind it? Because I'm sure there's more to it than "baby elephant surfing in space in the shock blast of an explosion" but I have no idea what.
Though, if the explosion is behind the elephant, why is it lit from the front in random places? In the same vein, considering the outlandish subject, the colours are bit grayish and don't look balanced (you have red, yellow, green, blue...). Also it's not standing in the same perspective as the plane under it and the legs don't look very convincing as they're very straight and lacking any hints of muscle or joints under the skin.
