    Look up Little Nemo and Windsor McCay. He was one of the first animators:

    One of the amazing things about Gertie is, not only did McCay draw the entire thing single-handedly, but, since there was no precedent for animation workflow, that included redrawing the backgrounds for every frame.

    Good lord I've seen some animations where the background is hand drawn mostly but it's rarely ever that smooth. Then that dinosaurs movement once again..... good lord.
