    Concept: Rave Barnacle
Considering the dramatic and energetic displays that they are well known for, the vast majority of a rave barnacle's life is relatively mundane. A nearly-microscopic, arthropod-like larva, upon falling to the earth, burrows into soft ground so that it may develop in safety. It will feed off of insects and detritus for several years as it grows and transforms into a sessile adult. The barnacle anchors itself into the ground with root-like feeding appendages, and the digging and gliding limbs of its larval form degenerate and disappear in adulthood. The tentacle-like stalk near the creature's head, meanwhile, will grow much longer and coil around the barnacle in its hole. The majority of its adult life will be spent absorbing nutrients through its 'roots' and storing energy for its grand performance.

The rave barnacle reproduces asexually, spawning several hundred microscopic larvae within a ring of gill-like structures near the end of its coiled-up stalk. During the next sunset after it gives birth, it begins to uncoil and emerge above the surface, extending itself up to 3 or even 4 meters high. Between the colourful hide it has developed in adulthood, its intimidating size, and the very bright bioluminescent 'lure' on the end of its stalk, the rave barnacle's presence is sure to be instantly noticed by any bystanders. It then increases this attention by releasing a cocktail of allomones into the air, which acts as a moderate stimulant and is immediately addictive to humans in even small quantities. After a crowd has started to form, the barnacle begins to sway rhythmically back and forth, slowly at first, while softly pulsing the light on its lure at a matching speed. Over the next few minutes the intensity of the pulsing light and the motion will increase, and the sway will become more of a whip. Soon the pulses of light become almost blinding and the force from the whipping is enough to throw the tiny larvae out from its gills and onto into the hair and clothes of the people gathered around. Although the larvae themselves are a dull brown colour, they often leave their parent's gills coated in a luminescent powder, giving them a bright, spark-like appearance. At full speed, the forces on the barnacle's roots from its movement will often cause the ground to shake nearby, and create a very deep, thumping beat.

While a few extremely hearty barnacles may retreat back underground when the display is over, the majority will remain above ground and die of exhaustion within a few days of this display. Most of the larvae will be carried away when the crowd disperses, and the lucky ones will be shaken off in parks or lawns, where they can easily dig down and grow relatively undisturbed until it is their turn to be the center of attention.
