I'm kind of struggling with this one. There's something wrong with the composition but I can't figure out what, and I'm not sure about the wings either. Any advice?

Have you done thumbnails for this?
Overall the silhouette of the characters is kinda awkward, as the others head gets lumped up in the wing and the small one's head gets impaled by the others tail. Also the character's don't seem to be standing on a round tree trunk, but are drawn more like they were on a flat surface and as the tree was just totally flat, and the perspective is pretty "non-committing" as there's some things that suggest we see the character's more from below, but then most things say we see them more from the side.

    EDIT:

Thank you Tiny Bird. I did do thumbnails but clearly not enough of them (it was about 10-12). I was actually trying to go with a slightly upward perspective, though not to the degree you did, but I guess that didn't work out. I'll do more thumbnails when I redo the piece, and study more composition. I'll also watch the tree trunk too. Thank you for the advice and diagrams.

    Smile Thumbnails

Three thumbnails (not yet tonal) from about 25+ I did last night, #3 being my favorite. The context is the mother griffin hears what may be danger in the distance and is trying to spot it/prepare for conflict while her two cubs wonder what's up.

    Tell me what you think.

Not sure I like the addition of the second cub. I'm a bit new to this so you can disregard everything I say, but in my opinion it almost makes your composition too balanced (if there is such a thing). The general mood I'm getting from your new thumbnails is very static. Honestly though, I'm not sure of how to go about fixing it. If I were painting this piece I might experiment with a different camera angle that would allow me to push some more dramatic perspective.

    Thanks for the advice.
For the second cub, I felt without it the picture just seems a little to empty. Part of the problem is probably because the cub is too big in the thumbnail relative to the perspective, and I'll probably put him in more shadow and make the mother bigger. I'll experiment with the perspective too.

Tweaked some thumbnails and added a predator sneaking up on the cub in the back.
